Limbach is a district of the community of Schmelz in the Saarlouis district , Saarland .

Limbach is located in the north of the community of Schmelz on the slopes of a valley through which the Talbach or Wurzelbach flows.
history
Limbach was first mentioned in a document in 1201, but the roots of the place go back at least to the Celtic times. "The Birg" (source of legends about the robber knight "Birg-Peter"), a Celtic, late Roman and medieval fortification , was subjected to extensive archaeological research in the 1980s. There are many traces of Roman times in Limbach and the surrounding area.
In the Middle Ages, Limbach, together with the Schaumberger Land, was part of the possessions of the Counts of Blieskastel before it became part of Lorraine in 1291 . The village belonged within the German Bellistum to the Ballei Schaumberg (Baillage de Schambourg). In 1766 Lorraine and with it Limbach fell to France . In 1787 Limbach was assigned to the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken . Due to the consequences of the French Revolution , the place was French again from 1794 to 1814 (cf. Canton Tholey ). At the time of this second French rule, schooling began in Limbach in 1796 . After the first Peace of Paris , the village became part of Prussia in 1814 , which from 1871 became part of the German Empire . Joseph de Brauer, major general in the French army, was born in Limbach in 1815.

After the First World War , Limbach belonged to the Saar area in 1919 . In a referendum on January 13, 1935, it came back to the German Reich. From 1945 to 1956 as part of the Saar Protectorate again under French administration, the Saarland became part of the Federal Republic of Germany on January 1, 1957 . As part of a territorial and administrative reform , the municipality of Limbach (Saarlouis district) , which belongs to the office Schmelz, came to the municipality of Schmelz on January 1, 1974 as a district.

Culture and sights
Buildings
The oldest building in Limbach is the tower of the Old Church , built around 1200 , the cross vault of which was painted around 1450 with 4 trumpet angels . The church was enlarged around 1750, with the medieval motifs being painted over with a depiction of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian . In 1912 the building was renovated and is available for parish, cultural and youth work.
Opposite the old church is the new parish church of St. Willibrord , built from 1906 to 1908 in neo-late Gothic style .

Limbach is home to SV Blau-Weiß Limbach Dorf e. V. with the Werner Risch Stadium .
economy
The main factory of Gebr. Meiser is located in the industrial area "Über Prims" west of Limbach . The steel processing company has specialized in the production of gratings and employs around 800 people there.
