Location of Heusweiler in the Saarbrücken regional association.

Wahlschied is located on Wahlbach and is the smallest district in terms of area of the municipality of Heusweiler on the northern edge of the Saarbrücken regional association in Saarland .

geography

Geographical location

Wahlschied is about 15 kilometers north of the state capital Saarbrücken on the eastern edge of the largest non-urban municipality of the Saarbrücken regional association, Heusweiler. The place is in the heart and southeast of the center of Saarland and the district triangle Saarlouis, Neunkirchen and Saarbrücken, on the community triangle consisting of Heusweiler, Illingen (Saar) and Quiigart, in a significant location in the southwest corner of the Saarbrücken motorway junction, the intersection of the A1 and the A8 . Furthermore, the place is in the European conurbation "Blue Banana", on the edge of the eastern limb of the Saar conurbation, the so-called Lyoner axis and on the axis Saarlouis - Neunkirchen along the A8.
The angular splitting of the place along the Wahlbach is characteristic. The site of the Icelandic Horses Wahlschied eV at Langgarten, a nature reserve, lies between the two traffic axes.

In Wahlschied there was a limestone gallery, which the street name still bears testimony to today, as well as a quarry that stretched along Turmstrasse and of which a single, vacant lot still bears witness.

geology

Wahlschied is located in the Saar-Nahe-Bergland , in the Prims-Blies-Hügelland, on the eastern foothills of the upper Köllertal , namely east of the Heusweiler-Reisbacher Mulde, on the Wahlbach, a left tributary of the Köllerbach and north of the Köllertaler Wald, part of the Saarkohlenwald , about one kilometer west of the Göttelborner Höhe . Wahlschied has, like the whole of Saarland, brown and parabroun earths .

Extension of the local area

The area of the place extends from the Teufelsberg and the Teufelsbergbach flowing along its foot, as well as the so-called Nordfeld in the north to the Stockwiesbach, as well as the street "Am Heidstock" in the south and the cemetery in the west to the municipal boundary along the Hochstraße and Göttelborner Street to the east.

Neighboring places

Wahlschied is surrounded in a clockwise direction, starting in the north, by the following places: Lummigart, Göttelborn , Quiommunik , Holz and Kutzhof.

Local division

Wahlschied is divided into the main town and the local part Wahlschieder Grube, which lies northeast of the town center in a depression.

climate

According to the effective division of Troll and Paffen, there is a sub-oceanic climate in Wahlschied. According to the classification by Köppen / Geiger, it is a maritime climate with sufficient precipitation all year round and an average maximum temperature of below 22 ° C and at least four months of temperatures above 10 ° C. According to Neef's genetic breakdown, the place is on the border between the maritime west side climate and the transitional climate. Like the Saarland, the place is one of the warmest regions in Germany.

history

Pre-Roman times

A Celtic original settlement was already in the Wahlschieder area before the Roman conquest of Gaul.

Roman times

In today's area of Wahlschied a Roman road ran, which roughly corresponded to today's course of the B268 and the A1 from Saarbrücken-Malstatt to Holz and further along the Saarstraße in Holz and the main road in Göttelborn to Merchweiler-Wemmetsweiler and to a Roman villa led. In Wahlschied another branch branched off from this street, which, coming from Völklingen, continued to Illingen.

It has now been proven that a Roman road led from Losheim via Hüttersdorf, Primsweiler and Lebach to Saarbrücken. The course from Landsweiler / Lebach remains unclear. It is believed that the road via Habach, along the Roman villa in Wiesbach, could have led to the grave field in Mangelhausen and after Wahlschied, where three Roman roads would cross. However, the remains of a villa rustica and a Gallo-Romanesque urn grave field were also discovered in Kirschhof, which at least suggests that the road through Kirschhof and Mangelhausen is.

In the area of today's Evangelical Church Wahlschied there is said to have been a Roman fort, which the street “Römerstraße” still bears witness to today. A Roman villa is said to have been on the slope of the Göttelbornerhöhe, between today's streets “In der Neuwies” and “Auf der Mauer”.

middle Ages

In the place of today's Protestant church, the first Romanesque church stood sometime between the 8th century and the 12th century. In 1200 a Gothic church was built there, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War. It was rebuilt in 1648.

The place is mentioned for the first time in 1331 and is therefore the oldest place in the Köllertal. The current place name has remained unchanged since 1735. Until then, the place had names such as Waldschid, Walscheidt, Waldschied, Walschiedt, Walschit, Walscheit, Walscheid, Walscht, Wallschied. The beginnings of the history of the Protestant church go back to the 14th century. In 1330 it is mentioned in the Taxa generalis . The collature of the church was made by the knights Boemund, Johannes and Nikolaus von Dagstuhl .

In the 14th century the collature of the electoral church of St. Willibrord changed to the Teutonic Order. This kept half of the tithe even after the acquisition of the villages Wahlschied and Lummigart by Count Philip II of Nassau-Saarbrücken and the associated introduction of the Lutheran confessions in Wahlschied.

Early modern age

In 1576 electoral refuge comes to the municipality of Heusweiler , which was still a court in the 13th century and belonged to the von Mühlenbach rulers and rose from its demolition and later decline in the late 14th century, was again destroyed and depopulated in the Thirty Years' War and only by the French Occupation (1793–1814) for Mairie, the cornerstone of today's capital of the upper Köllertal and the large community of Heusweiler.

Modern times

In 1725 the first school was built in Wahlschied. In 1773 the place becomes a mining settlement. Four miners work in the first mine.

In 1889 a well pipe was laid. They were not needed for centuries, as Wahlschied was very watery and many scoop holes, called Pütze, were used for people and cattle. While mining lime, which was burned on site, a rich water source was found. To use the spring, a well house was built, from which the water was led with cast pipes to the village in wells equipped with valves. The village wells that had just been built were replaced barely ten years later by the aqueduct from the Göttelborn water tower. The construction of the water tower went hand in hand with the draining of the Göttelborn mine .

20th century

In 1901 the construction of today's Protestant church began. Since 1927 there has been a scheduled bus transfer to Saarbrücken, which was set up and maintained by the electoral deputy company Fischer, and from 1953 the place was connected to the Trollibus route Heusweiler - Holz. The newly built Catholic church is consecrated in 1956. The sports and culture hall Wahlschied was completed in 1973. On January 1, 1974 Wahlschied was incorporated into the community of Heusweiler. On September 14, 1979 the village fountain behind the Protestant church was inaugurated. On the initiative of the later honorary chairman of the SV Wahlschied, the Wahlschieder fountain festival takes place for the first time on May 1, 1982 around the village fountain. In 1983 politics and associations decided to cooperate with regard to the maintenance of the bird sanctuary, which is located on the eastern foothills of the settlement. In June 1987, areas on the Teufelsberg and in Langgarten were declared landscape protection areas.

1989 shows the dark side of mining: Due to severe damage to the mine, two houses in the former street “Im Gäßchen” are demolished. Today the street is closed and the area is undeveloped. On the 3rd Advent in 1999 the weathercock fell from the top of the church tower - without causing any damage.

21st century

August 4, 2000: Wahlschied receives its first industrial park: Auf Hirtenwies. Today Wahlschieder companies are located there, such as a building materials trade, a car company and a crane warehouse belonging to BBL Cranes. From 2002 to 2003 the artificial turf pitch of SV Wahlschied was built. In the 00s, the construction of a Don-Bosco school north of the cemetery, on Holzer Flur, was prevented by electoral protests and citizens of Holz, as was the construction of a crematorium north of the A1 motorway, on today's industrial park. However, the protests were unable to prevent Wahlschieder Bürger from closing the small elementary school, which is why the Wahlschieder elementary school students have had to take the bus to the Holz elementary school since then as part of the Saarland elementary school reform. In July 2009, streets and houses along the Wahlbach were flooded by heavy rain.

An oak on the property of the farmhouse in Vorstadtstraße is protected as a natural monument. The landscape features that surround Wahlschied are visible from afar: the world's highest winding tower, shaft IV, of the Göttelborn pit and the cooling tower of the coal-fired power station Quiigart / Weiher in the neighboring community Quiigart; the water tower Holz with the former observation restaurant and the winding tower of the pit wood in the municipality of wood, as well as the over 200 meter high transmission mast Göttelborner Höhe of the Saarland broadcasting station located in the local area. On the border between Kutzhof and Wahlschied, not far from today's cemetery, two stone gate hinges testify to the abandoned Jewish cemetery, which is in a neglected, overgrown condition. In the area of Wahlschied there were three gun bunkers of the west wall, which have now been blown up and filled in . One was on Vorstadtstraße between lots 57 and 59. A second was on the northeast corner of today's sports field on the Wahlbach. The hill can still be seen here today. The third was next to the Nagel driving school in the street "Auf der Mauer".
