Location of Hemmersdorf in Saarland

Hemmersdorf ( Hemeschdroff in Moselle Franconia ) is one of the largest towns in the Saarland municipality of Rehlingen-Siersburg in the Niedtal valley , with over 2200 inhabitants . In the west, the village, through which the Nied flows in a west-east direction, borders on France ; it is therefore on the border between southern and northern Saargau and is one of them.

history

Numerous finds prove an early historical settlement of the area. Hemmersdorf Castle was first mentioned in 1150 as the possession of the von Hymmersdorf family . The fiefdom passed into the possession of the Bechel family in 1450 and was taken over by Johann Zandt von Merl in 1589. Franz Duhan, who later became Count Duhan, acquired rights and property in 1719. The current owners are trying to restore and preserve the castle.

Today's place Hemmersdorf emerged as part of an administrative reform of the National Socialists in 1937 from the previously independent places Großhemmersdorf on the left of the Nied and Kerprichhemmersdorf on the right of the Nied. This explains the existence of two churches, St. Nikolaus in Groß-Hemmersdorf and St. Konrad in Kerprich-Hemmersdorf. The two formerly independent parishes now form a parish with its seat in St. Konrad. The Nikolauskirche and the church Maria Hilfe der Christisten in the neighboring village of Fürweiler in the northern Saargau are branch churches .

Until the end of 1973, Hemmersdorf was an independent municipality in what was then the district of Siersburg. In the course of the territorial and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Hemmersdorf became a municipality of the municipality of Rehlingen on January 1, 1974, which was later renamed Rehlingen-Siersburg.

The character of the place as a former workers 'and farmers' village is still evident today, especially in the Lorraine farmhouses typical of the region ; many of them have been restored in an exemplary manner, which has brought Hemmersdorf numerous awards in the competition Our village should become more beautiful .
