The Church of St. Nikolaus is a Roman Catholic church in Hemmersdorf , a district of the Saarland community of Rehlingen-Siersburg , Saarlouis district . The church is a branch church of St. Konrad in the same place and is dedicated to St. Nicholas . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

There was probably a church or chapel in Hemmersdorf as early as the 10th century . This assumption is based on a decree of Archbishop Adalbero on the pilgrimage to Mettlach , from which it emerges that there was a parish in the place (formerly Hymersdorf) .

Around 1480 or earlier, a Gothic church was built, whose choir with its five-part ribbed vault now serves as a sacristy . The actual church building was rebuilt as a simple hall structure in the 18th century . In 1867 the tower of the church was built. An extension was built between 1934 and 1936. After 1945 the church underwent restoration .

Furnishing

The church is equipped with a way of the cross consisting of reliefs , which is attached to the right side of the interior as seen from the altar. There are numerous figures of saints in the chancel . The chancel is flanked by two side altars with paintings above . The organ built in 1989 by Hugo Mayer Orgelbau is set up on a gallery above the entrance . The instrument has 6 registers on a manual and pedal.

A special feature in the old choir, today's sacristy, is a sacrament niche with an oculus . It represents a connection from the inside of the church to the outside and is typical of many late Romanesque and early Gothic churches . In Lorraine room there is for many examples.
