Rapperath is a district of the community-free municipality Morbach in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Rapperath is located in the Hunsrück . The neighboring towns are Weiperath , Gonzerath and Merscheid .

history

Rapperath was first mentioned in a document on April 4, 1278. At that time, however, Rapperath was known by other names, e.g. B. Rapperode, Raperoth or Rapilroid, where "Rappo" was a Franconian personal name and "Rath" was a regional name for clearing .

Rapperath Church

In 1765 a parish church was built in Rapperath . This was consecrated to St. Wendelin .

A Marian column was also built above Rapperath in 1954. The Madonna is made of sandstone and was created by a Morbach sculptor.

The great Lord God

Close to two rocks at the end of the village you will find two small chapels , surrounded by trees and the Dhron stream , a superhuman figure. According to tradition, the "Great Lord God" was created by a farmer from Wirschweiler and is said to have stood in their village church until the Reformation . In 1557 after the introduction of the Protestant faith, the cross was removed from the church. A farmer from Rapperath is said to have found it in front of the church, loaded it on his wagon and brought it to Rapperath, where it was later integrated into the chapel. The crucifix is ​​also said to heal miracles.
