history

Parish

Heusweiler probably originally belonged to the parish of Köllerbach , since apart from the Martinskirche in Kölln (now part of Köllerbach) no other church in the area was mentioned earlier.

In the 14th century a separate church was built in Heusweiler, the choir of which has been preserved as part of the Protestant church to this day. The church building was named as the foundation of the Counts of Saarbrücken and was dedicated to St. Martin . In 1330 the Huswillre parish was mentioned for the first time in the Taxa generalis (register of the property of the Archdiocese of Trier ), whereby the Counts of Saarbrücken were in possession of the collature . Following an order from Pope Boniface IX. On November 22, 1398, the provost of the Trier Simeonstift transferred the Heusweiler parish to the archdeacon Petrus, son of Petrus vom Köllertal. In addition to Heusweiler, the places Rittershofen, Numborn , Holz , Berschweiler and Qui Various belonged to the parish of Heusweiler, which was subordinate to the Archdeaconate of Merzig . Up until the 15th century, the parish service was partly carried out by the Premonstratensians of the Wadgassen Abbey . In 1575 the Reformation was introduced in the county of Saarbrücken . Thus, only services according to Protestant regulations were allowed to take place.

In the course of the reunion policy in the second half of the 17th century, through which Heusweiler came under French rule, the director of the Saar department, Anton Bergeron de la Goupilliere, ordered the common use of places of worship by Protestants and Catholics in those places with only a church building. The Heusweiler Church then became a simultaneous church . In 1688 there were again Catholic families in Heusweiler. Initially, the Heusweiler Catholics were looked after by the pastor of Eiweiler , before the Wadgassen Abbey took over the care of Heusweiler as a separate parish, along with nine other localities, in 1718. The Simultaneum ended in 1863 with the inauguration of the newly built Catholic parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary .

Church building

Today's church building was built in the neo-Gothic style between 1862 and 1863 according to plans by the architect Carl Friedrich Müller ( Saarlouis ) . The consecration took place on October 6th, 1863. In 1898/99 the church was extended by the construction of a bell tower , for the design of which architect Wilhelm Hector ( Saarbrücken-St. Johann ) was responsible. From 1955 to 1966 there were renovations and new construction measures in which a new large hall and a crypt were built instead of the old nave . The plans for this came from the architect H. Erb (Heusweiler). The tower and the choir were not affected by the measures. The north facade of the old ship facing Trierer Strasse was also largely preserved. As a result of the renovation and new building measures, the church is no longer oriented to the east, but to the south.

In the years 1990 to 1993 the church was subjected to restorations . According to plans by the architect Willi Latz (Köllerbach), further restoration and conversion work was carried out in 2007 concerning the chancel.

Furnishing

The church's furnishings include 14 stations of the cross from 1962, two large windows from 1962 to 1963 and an enamel door from 1964 to 1965, designed by the glass painter and architect György Lehoczky (Saarbrücken). Glass painter Ferdinand Selgrad ( Spiesen-Elversberg ) designed an 8 × 8 meter altarpiece in the form of a mosaic cross with the Last Supper motif . In 2007, sculptor Hans Rams ( Niederbreitbach ) was responsible for the artistic redesign of the chancel, for which an altar made of dark gray Eifel basalt , reusing the table top of the old altar, an ambo , sediments and a baptismal font were designed.

The late baroque wooden figures originally come from the church of the Wadgassen Abbey. The figures created around 1770 show a. a. " Maria on the globe", St. Urban , St. Helene and St. Norbert . The most valuable item of sacred art in the church is the visitation group, which dates back to before 1500.
