The Antoniuskirche is a Catholic church in the Rödelheim district of Frankfurt am Main . The listed neo-Gothic building was built between 1892 and 1894, was largely destroyed by aerial bombs in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main in 1944 and rebuilt after the Second World War . Since January 1st 2017 the church belongs to the parish Sankt Marien Frankfurt am Main.

history

The first documentary mention of Rödelheim attests to the donation of a church in Radilenheim to Lorsch Abbey in 788 . In 1209, Emperor Friedrich II transferred the Rödelheim chapel to the German Order Commander in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen . It was exchanged for Werner I. von Falkenstein in 1275 . In 1356, St. Cyriacus is mentioned as patron for the first time.

In 1425 Rödelheim and his chapel came to Kronberg , and later to the Solms family through inheritance .

In 1545, Count Magnus von Solms-Rödelheim introduced the Reformation . Even if not quite as strict as in other rulers, it was made impossible for Catholics to stay in the long run. They emigrated to Frankfurt, Sossenheim or Höchst . The Cyriakus Church has been used by the Protestant parish ever since.

In 1801, Count Vollrath zu Solms-Rödelheim allowed the local Catholics to hold private services . The small parish consisted of 38 families with 105 people. In 1819, an old tannery on Rebstöcker Weg was acquired and converted into a small church. Rich Catholic merchants from Frankfurt, Brentano , Guaita , Schweitzer and others, settled their country houses far outside the gates of the city in Rödelheim. They donated a fund, the proceeds of which were intended to secure the salary of a first pastor. After a lengthy correspondence with the Episcopal Ordinariate in Mainz and the state authorities, the Catholic parish in Rödelheim was established in 1842. 423 Catholics belonged to it.

The tannery church became too small and dilapidated over the years. So a church building association was founded. His efforts and a collection in German-speaking Europe for the benefit of St. Antonius von Rödelheim allowed the foundation stone to be laid in 1892 and the inauguration of a neo-Gothic church building in 1894 . This was largely destroyed by aerial bombs in two air raids in 1944 .

A new church building association was founded after the end of the war and gradually rebuilt the building. After the Second Vatican Council , the sanctuary was redesigned.

The church, which has been renovated several times, is a listed building. The interior is adorned with murals on iron panels in the Nazarene style .
