The parish church of St. Aloysius in Steinbach

The St. Aloysius Church is a Catholic parish church in Steinbach, a district of Lebach in Saarland . The patron saint of the church is St. Aloysius . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

Already at the turn of the millennium Steinbach belonged together with Dessdorf (Dörsdorf) and Aspach (Aschbach) to the parish of Echeswyler ( Thalexweiler ) and thus to the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey . At the beginning of the 20th century, the strong population increase in the places that belong to the parish Thalexweiler, including Steinbach, made it necessary to consider how the lack of space in the parish church could be eliminated. Church building associations were formed in the branches with the aim of building their own churches. A planned expansion of the parish church in Thalexweiler received no support.

In the years 1910/1911 the parish finally gave up the expansion plan and instead envisaged building a new church in Steinbach as well as separating the branch and establishing an independent parish. The plans for the church were designed by the architect and cathedral builder Julius Wirtz from Trier , although the church tower could not be built at first because the building permit ruled this out. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 20, 1912. The foundation stone was laid on July 28 of the same year. The church was consecrated in the following year. In 1916 the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Antonius Mönch.

In 1919 the Trier bishop Michael Felix Korum ordered the establishment of the chapel congregation (vicariate) Steinbach / Dörsdorf with independent asset management and its own church council. On July 1, 1925, the Vicarie Steinbach / Dörsdorf was raised to an independent parish Steinbach / Dörsdorf and thus separated from the mother parish Thalexweiler.

In the years 1952 to 1953 the construction of the bell tower took place , which did not take place according to the plans of 1911, but according to a new plan by the architect Stockhausen ( Neunkirchen ).

Furnishing

View inside the church
High altar

The high altar from 1922 is worth seeing inside the church . It contains an altarpiece with the representation of the Holy Trinity by Prof. Franz Schilling ( Munich ). At the top of the altar there is a depiction of Mary with baby Jesus. On the left side altar from 1922, dedicated to the memory of the fallen Steinbacher dedicated to the First World War , is a Pietà placed. The right side altar dates from 1932 and is dedicated to St. Theresa of the Child Jesus .

In the left vestibule is the altar dedicated to the Holy Brother Konrad , in the middle vestibule there is a statue of Saint Barbara , decorated with symbols of mining .

The pulpit on the right side of the chancel was made in 1917 and shows the symbols of the four Evangelists: Winged Man ( Matthew ), Leo ( Mark ), bull ( Luke ) and Eagle ( John ).

Also noteworthy is the interior painting , which began in 1927 by the painter Heinrich von Rüden ( Saarbrücken ) and was completed between 1927 and 1931 by Franz Schilling (Munich). It depicts motifs from the New Testament (including Mary with the baby Jesus, the crucifixion of Christ ).

The four windows in the chancel depict events from the life of the patron saint Saint Aloysius. The windows in the side walls show depictions of saints .

Tower and bells

The 45 m high tower of the church , made of Bubach sandstone , could only be built in 1952/53 according to plans by the architect Stockhausen (Neunkirchen), as the original concept of cathedral builder Julius Wirtz from 1911 could not be realized due to the world wars and the inflationary period . The tower is octagonal and tapers towards the top. At the foot of the tower there is a chapel “Maria with the Child” and two panels that contain the names of the Steinbach soldiers who died in the Second World War .
There is a bell in the tower , consisting of three bells that were cast in 1952 in the Causard bell foundry in Colmar :

No. Surname volume Weight (kg)
1 Holy Trinity d 2215
2 St. Barbara (miner's bell) f 1265
3 St. Mary (Peace Bell) G 910

In the upper free column part of the tower there is a carillon consisting of 8 bells from 50 to 250 kg. Every day at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. they play the Aloysius song and one of three possible songs from Mary.
