history
In a papal charter from 1246 Thalexweiler was mentioned as a parish , with Tholey Abbey being the owner of the patronage rights and the tithe right . The tower was built around 1470, followed by the construction of a new nave according to plans by the architect Nicolas Robin ( Falkenberg / Lorraine ) in 1784 . In 1911 a sacristy was added to the church . In the years 1967 to 1968 the church was subjected to a renovation and expansion measure. A new nave was built on the north side according to plans by architect Heinrich Otto Vogel ( Trier ). The baroque nave became the new sanctuary.
Church building
The church building erected in 1784 with a length of 32.50 meters and a width of 11.55 meters is a simple hall building with a three-sided end, to which the church tower from the 15th century adjoins to the east. The building made of quarry stones is provided with protruding corner cuboids, while the west facade is faced with cuboids. The nave with arched windows has four window axes and merges into a narrower choir , which, like the ship, has arched windows.
In the west facade there is a round arched portal , flanked by two columns with Corinthian capitals on which an entablature with a gable top rests. The gable above the portal is crowned with the coat of arms of the Prior von Tholey, which is set in the coat of arms of Tholeyer Abbey. The inscription with chronogram in the entablature reads: “s. aLbano ereXIt ConVentVs thoLegIensIs "
The choir adjoins the church tower, which in the ground floor area opens in a pointed arch with a hollow profile to the east and south, thus forming a space open on both sides. The north side of this room has a simple pointed arch window studded with noses. The ceiling of the room forms a cross vault with grooved ribs. On the exterior of the tower, remains of cornices point to other floors. On the upper floor there are sound openings originating from the Romanesque architectural language, each with two round arches, separated by rectangular pillars with bevelled edges. A vault stone with the coat of arms of the Tholeyer abbot Nikolaus von Löwenstein, as well as the Gothic forms in the basement, refer to the 15th century, which was confirmed by a dendrochronological investigation with a date to around 1480. The pointed helm of the tower is slated , as is the roof over the nave and the choir.
Furnishing
The main altar with a crucifix and a painting of the resurrection of Jesus , which originally stood in the pilgrimage church in Klausen , are part of the furnishings of the church . The altar was created in the middle of the 18th century by Josef Giner the Elder ( Thaur / Innsbruck ).
The two original side altars and the pulpit by the carver Klesen ( Scheuert ) also date from the middle of the 18th century .
The furnishings also include figures of St. John the Baptist and St. Francis , both wooden sculptures from the first half of the 19th century, a wooden figure of St. Albanus, created around 1780, a wooden sculpture of St. Wendalinus from the middle of the 18th century, one of the fallen of the First world war donated terracotta - Pietà from 1922, and a terracotta figure of St. Barbara , created in 1900. In the entrance area of the cultivation of 1967/68, a terracotta figure of is the Archangel Michael , which was built about 1900.
In the entrance area of a side entrance on the south side of the church there is a memorial plaque for Pastor Johann Heinrich Demerath, whose grave was found in 1911 during earthworks. During his tenure from 1763 to 1820, Demerath played a key role in the construction of the church from 1784.
A sandstone statue of St. Albanus from 1985/86 by the sculptor Hanns Scherl ( Wittlich ) stands on the church forecourt .
