St. Laurentius in Piding-Mauthausen

The St. Laurentius Church in Mauthausen is a branch church of the Piding parish in the Berchtesgadener Land district ( Upper Bavaria ). It stands on the edge of a terrace that formed a post-glacial high bank of the Saalach River . The church itself was built in the Romanesque style around 1200, probably on the site of a previous building. The original Romanesque window openings, which were later bricked up, can still be seen on the south and east sides of the outer walls made of limestone blocks. The wooden shingle roof of the church has a wooden ridge turret .

Inside, around 1500, vaults were drawn in instead of a flat wooden ceiling. The Gothic vault ribs are still preserved in the choir room . In the nave , they were probably in the time of Baroque knocked off and imitated in 19th-century painting. Important late Gothic frescoes were discovered and uncovered on the walls and the vault in 1951 . The paintings in the choir room were created around 1420 and show, among other things, on the left side Jesus Christ as the Man of Sorrows, a protective cloak Madonna and St. Rupert of Salzburg (former diocese and state patron). An adoration of the Magi can be seen behind the high altar . In the vault of the choir, Christ is depicted as the judge of the world, surrounded by the symbols for the four evangelists Mark, Luke, Matthew and John. Coats of arms are attached to the keystones. Among other things, there is the coat of arms of the Höglwörth monastery with the crossed keys (the monastery was responsible for pastoral care). The shield with the two wings is the coat of arms of the Counts of Plain , from whose domain the southern part of the Rupertiwinkel was created. On the north wall of the nave there is an almost life-size depiction of the Holy Helpers, which were created around 1500. The unknown painter omitted St. Cyriacus here, but added St. Nicholas and Leonhard to the group. The group of emergency helpers, which has normally grown from 14 to 15, is distributed symmetrically in three arches.

The high altar in the Rococo style dates from the middle of the 18th century. In the middle it shows the figure of the church patron Laurentius of Rome (16th century). On the left side St. Sebastian and on the right St. Florian. The excerpt shows the stoning of St. Stephen. The two side altars are simple works that imitate architecture and sculpture in painting (left altar: Mary, right altar: Jesus on the cross). On the west side there is a wooden gallery above the entrance, which is dated 1661. The simple church stalls date from the 18th century.

The church was renovated in 1986 and is open to visitors during the day.

organ

The current organ of the church comes from Hugo Mayer . It was originally built as a house organ and now stands on the west gallery of the church. The instrument has 6 registers on two manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
