San Juan Talpa is a municipality in El Salvador in the La Paz department .

Surname

The Nawat name Talpan is interpreted as “on earth” or “earthy place”, cf. see Nawat tal ( nahuatl tlalli ) "earth" and the ending -pan "on", together talpan (nahuatl tlalpan ) "on earth".

history

Talpan was a settlement of the Nonualcos , a tribe of the Pipil . Around 1200 the area came under the rule of Cuzcatlan .

The area was finally conquered by the Spaniards in 1528. In 1740, according to the mayor (alcalde mayor) of San Salvador, Manuel de Gálvez Corral, there were 240 taxable Indians in San Juan Talpa , with relatives in total about 1200, as well as some Ladinos .

On June 12, 1824 Ataco first came to the department of San Salvador and then changed several times between the departments of Cuzcatlán, San Salvador and La Paz. Since February 21, 1852 it has belonged to the La Paz department. On April 26, 1858, it had 502 inhabitants , in 1890 already 1800 inhabitants.

On March 31, 1894, San Juan Talpa received city rights.

Attractions

San Juan Talpa is home to the only astronomical observatory in El Salvador, construction of which began in 1994 and which was opened on February 2, 2000 by the Salvadoran Astronomical Society (Asociación Salvadoreña de Astronomia, ASTRO) .

Pipil culture

The region of the Nonualcos, to which San Juan Talpa also belongs, was a center of the Pipil culture. The Pipil language Nawat has practically died out as a result of the harsh repression since the genocide of the Pipil in 1932. In San Juan Talpa, the nawat can be heard to a limited extent again as the only place outside of the Department of Sonsonate: the Alberto Varela school in San Juan Talpa is participating in a teaching project for this language that has been running since 2003. In 2008, 600 students learned Nawat from four teachers.
