La Paz is one of 14 departments in El Salvador and is located in the south of the country on the Pacific coast .
The capital of the department is Zacatecoluca . The department was founded on February 21, 1852 from parts of the department of San Vicente.

economy
The economy of the department - a predominantly warm and humid mountain region with heights of up to 1000 meters - is based on the cultivation of coffee, tobacco, cotton, sugar cane, cassava and fruits as well as on sugar production, wood processing and dairy farming.
