Cabañas is one of 14 departments in El Salvador and is located in the north of the country on the border with Honduras .

The capital of the department is Sensuntepeque . Cabañas was founded on February 10, 1873. The department received its name from General José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos .

The main economic drivers in Cabañas are the cultivation of beans and sugar cane . A hydropower plant on the Río Lempa supplies the region with electricity.
