José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos (born June 9, 1805 in Comayagua, Honduras ; † January 8, 1871 there ) was Supremo Director of Honduras from March 1, 1852 to October 18, 1855 .

Life

His parents were Juana Fiallos and José María Cabañas Rivera. He married Petronila Barrios, a sister of Gerardo Barrios . He received training at the Colegio Tridentino in Comayagua. He belonged to the Partido Liberal . In 1827 he joined the army of the República Federal de Centroamérica under José Francisco Morazán Quezada , whose deputy he was. On November 11, 1828 he took part in the battle of Batalla de La Trinidad . On April 6, 1839 he took part in the Battle of Espíritu Santo . On September 25, 1839 he took part in the battle of Batalla de San Pedro Perulapán . After the Morázan and the Partido Liberal failed and defeated in an attempt to conquer Guatemala City in 1840, Cabañas went into exile in Panama. He later met with Morazán in Costa Rica. When Morazán was fusilized in San José on September 15, 1842 , Cabañas commented:

"No es posible a nosotros nos pueden fusilar, pero al general Morazán no ... ese sería un crimen hacia Centroámerica ..."

(It is not possible that they can fuss us, but General Morazán no ... this would be a crime against Central America ...)

Then Cabañas went to El Salvador. There he failed on September 5, 1844 with Gerardo Barrios in an attempted coup against Francisco Malespín and fled to Nicaragua , which was one of the triggers for the Guerra de Malespín . With Gerardo Barrios he managed to escape from besieged León (Nicaragua) to El Salvador. In El Salvador he worked for the governments of Eugenio Aguilar (1846–1848) and Doroteo Vasconcelos (1848–1851)

Presidency

As president, he equipped José María Vallé , Francisco Castellón Sanabria , Máximo Jerez Tellería , members of the Nicaraguan Partido Democrático with weapons and had them return to El Realejo via the Isla del Tigre in the Gulf of Fonseca on a US steamer with Captain Gilbert Morton where they arrived May 5, 1854 and marched on León . The Supremo Director of Nicaragua, Fruto Chamorro Pérez fled from the stronghold of the Liberals León to Granada (Nicaragua) and also wanted to move the seat of government there.

During his presidency, Honduras was a member of the Representación Nacional de Centroamérica , to whose president he was elected by the constitutional assembly in Tegucigalpa in October 1852 by representatives from Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. In his attempt to revive Central American integration with his liberal spirit, Cabañas came into conflict with the conservative government of José Rafael Carrera Turcios in Guatemala. A group of Honduran conservatives around José Santos Guardiola Bustillo was armed by José Rafael Carrera Turcios and overthrew Cabañas with the battle of Batalla de Masaguara on October 6, 1855. He went into exile in El Salvador, where he became government minister to his brother-in-law Gerardo Barrios . In the last years of his life, Cabañas returned to Comayagua. In El Salvador, the Cabañas department is named after him.
