Máximo Jerez Tellería

Máximo Jerez Tellería (* 1818 in León (Nicaragua) , † 1881 in Washington, DC ) was Foreign Minister of Nicaragua.

Life

Máximo Jerez Tellería was a foremost liberal thinker in Nicaraguan history. The passionate advocate of political and economic unity in Central America was a member of the Partido Democrático .

After becoming Supremo Director in 1853, Fruto Chamorro Pérez had expelled Máximo Jerez Tellería, Francisco Castellón Sanabria , Mateo Pineda and José María Valle alias El Chelón , members of the Partido Democrático to Honduras . This group armed itself in Honduras with the support of President José Trinidad Cabañas and returned to El Realejo via the Isla del Tigre in the Gulf of Fonseca with a US steamer with captain Gilbert Morton on May 5, 1854 . The group marched on León . Fruto Chamorro Pérez fled from the stronghold of the Liberals León to Granada (Nicaragua) and wanted to move the seat of government there. In October 1854, Francisco Castellón Sanabria signed a contract with the US military service provider Byron Cole, according to which the use of 200 mercenaries was agreed, who were led by William Walker in June 1855 .

In the Rivas cabinet of October 30, 1855, Máximo Jerez Tellería was Minister of War. Máximo Jerez Tellería was Foreign Minister in the government of Patricio Rivas which was controlled by Walker.

In the presidential elections in 1856 none of the three candidates (Máximo Jerez, Trinidad Salazar and Patricio Rivas) won a majority. The legislature seemed to choose Máximo Jerez Tellería as president. According to Walker's will, Patricio Rivas announced new elections for March 10, 1856.

On June 25, 1856, Patricio Rivas declared William Walker a traitor and enemy of Nicaragua by law. Máximo Jerez Tellería also humbly recognized his mistake. On June 14, 1856, Máximo Jerez Tellería turned to the government of Guatemala as Foreign Minister of Chinandega and asked for the conditions for a joint fight against Walker.

On January 23, 1857 a duumvirate was agreed with Tomás Martínez Guerrero from the Partido Legitimista from June 24, 1857 to November 15, 1857 .

On April 15, 1858, Máximo Jerez Tellería signed the Tratado Cañas-Jerez on the border between the two countries as an agent in Costa Rica . The agent for Costa Rica was José María Cañas Escamilla.

In 1876 he organized a group of irregulars from El Salvador to overthrow the government of Pedro Joaquín Chamorro y Alfaro Partido Legitimista , which failed.

Honors

There is a statue in his honor in the city of León.
