Francisco Gómez y Argüelles

Francisco Gómez y Argüelles (* 1810 Juticalpa, Departamento Olancho ; † July 25, 1854 before Jalteva, Honduras ) was President of Honduras from February 1 to March 1, 1852 and from May 9 to December 31, 1853 .

Life

His parents were Nora Argüelles and Francisco Gómez Midence. He married Nieves Cabañas Fiallos, a sister of José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos . Francisco Gómez y Argüelles was a member of the Partido Liberal de Honduras . Francisco Gómez y Argüelles was a lawyer and general.

In his second term, Juan Nepomuceno Fernández Lindo y Zelaya formed a liberal alliance with the President of El Salvador, Doroteo Vasconcelos Vides , to declare war on the José Rafael Carrera Turcio government in Guatemala. Allied troops invaded Guatemala and were defeated by Guatemalan troops in the Battle of San José La Arada on February 2, 1851. Subsequently, Nepomuceno Fernández was no longer president.

Francisco Gómez y Argüelles became executive president, while MPs Francisco López, Vicente Vaquero and León Alvarado traveled to El Salvador and presented his brother-in-law, José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos, with his certificate of appointment as president.

The Partido Liberal continued its aggression against the conservative Carrera in 1853 under José de la Trinidad Francisco Cabañas Fiallos . To this end, Cabañas gave office to his deputy José Santiago Bueso Soto , who requested his resignation, which is why the parliament elected Gómez president. As president, he decreed a trade ban with Guatemala.

Cabañas sent Gómez to Nicaragua in 1854 to support the liberal Partido Democrático (Nicaragua) , which had bought the services of William Walker (mercenary) and his filibuster pirates from the military service provider Byron Cole . On July 16, 1854, Gómez wanted to occupy a place near Granada (Nicaragua) . This was defended by troops under Fruto Chamorro Pérez and cholera . Francisco Gómez y Argüelles succumbed to cholera on July 25, 1854.
