The Partido Liberal de Honduras ( PLH ; Liberal Party of Honduras ) is a party in Honduras .

The party was founded on February 5, 1891. The party headquarters are in the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa . The party's color is red. The main rival is the conservative Partido Nacional de Honduras (PNH).

Elections 2001

In the parliamentary elections in Honduras 2001 on November 25, 2001, the PLH received 40.8% of the votes and with 55 of the 128 seats in parliament (Congreso Nacional) no majority. The PLH presidential candidate Rafael Pineda Ponce (he received 44.3% of the vote) also had to surrender to the PNH candidate Ricardo Maduro , who was elected president with 52.2%.

2005 elections

In the parliamentary elections in Honduras in 2005 on November 27, 2005, the PLH grew and won 62 seats. This alone did not have a majority in the chamber. In the presidential election, however, the PLH candidate Manuel Zelaya won with 49.9% of the votes over the PNH candidate Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo Sosa , who received only 46.2% of the votes.

In the following years, Zelaya showed sympathy for the governments of the ALBA , which the state of Honduras joined on August 25, 2008. The Partido Liberal was split into a Zelaya-supporting left wing and a conservative wing, led by inner-party competitor Roberto Micheletti .

The dispute escalated when Zelaya wanted to clear the way for a second term as president by calling a constituent assembly and then changing the constitution. The Constitutional Court and Parliament rejected this plan. As a result, Zelaya was declared deposed in the 2009 coup in Honduras and taken out of the country.

Elections 2009

In the general election in Honduras in 2009 on November 29, 2009, the PLH suffered a heavy defeat. Her presidential candidate Elvin Santos was also clearly defeated by the PNH candidate Porfirio Lobo Sosa .

Elections 2013

In the parliamentary elections in Honduras in 2013 in November 2013, the PLH suffered another defeat. Your presidential candidate Mauricio Villeda was defeated by the PNH candidate Juan Orlando Hernández .
