Roberto Micheletti

Roberto Micheletti Bain (born August 13, 1948 in El Progreso , Yoro Department , Honduras ) was appointed President of Honduras after a military coup on June 28, 2009 by the Honduran parliament. He served as de facto head of state of the Republic of Honduras until January 27, 2010 .

Political and professional career

Micheletti, the son of Italian immigrants from Lombardy, is a transport company in his hometown of El Progreso. During the tenure of President Carlos Roberto Flores Facussé (1998-2002) he was director of the state telephone company Hondutel . Since January 2006 he has been President of the Honduran Parliament. In 2008 he applied for his party's nomination for the presidential elections in November 2009, but failed because of the incumbent Vice President Elvin Ernesto Santos .

In November 2009 Micheletti was elected Vice President of the Liberal International , an umbrella organization of liberal parties to which the German FDP belongs , among others .

Presidency

Appointment as president

Like his predecessor Manuel Zelaya, who was overthrown by military force, Micheletti is a member of the Liberal Party . While Zelaya attributed himself to the left wing of the party and, together with trade unions, farmers' associations and indigenous organizations, "sought to open the way to a constituent assembly through which a participatory democracy " should replace the previous Honduran system of government , Micheletti is regarded as its internal adversary . The coup in Honduras in 2009 , the first coup in the past 16 years in Central America.
