Usulután is one of 14 departments in El Salvador and is located in the south of the country on the Pacific coast .
The capital of the department ( cabecera ) is the city of the same name Usulután . The department was founded on June 22, 1865. The name Usulután comes from the Nahuatl language and means something like "place of the ocelot".
Usulután is home to the Usulután volcano and the Tecapa volcano, as well as the Bosque de Nancuchiname forest area, which is partially declared a biosphere reserve . The most famous beaches in El Salvador are also in Usulután.
