Chalatenango is one of 14 departments in El Salvador and is located in the north of the country on the border with Honduras .

The capital of the department is the city of the same name Chalatenango . Chalatenango was founded on February 14, 1855.

The hydroelectric power stations Cerrón Grande and 5 de Nov on the Río Lempa supply the region with electricity. Chalatenango is also home to the highest mountain in El Salvador, El Pital at 2,730 meters.
