history

The city was founded by the indigenous Lenca people before the Spanish occupation , but was given to the Pipil people in the fifteenth century . In 1550 the settlement had around 600 inhabitants. The mayor of San Salvador , Manuel Corral de Galvez, wrote in 1740 that Chalatenango only had about 125 inhabitants. On February 16, 1831, the settlement received the rank of Villa ( small town ) in recognition of the important services provided in the process of El Salvador's independence.

Chalatenango was heavily influenced by the civil war. Many people in the city had to leave their homes. However, in the early 1990s and after the peace agreement, people repopulated the region.
