Zacatecoluca is the capital of the La Paz department in the south of the Central American state of El Salvador and a municipality at the southeastern base of Chichontepec in the Río Lempa valley .

history
Zacatecos is the name in Nahuatl for residents of an area with sufficient Zacate . The city was a center of the independence movements of 1811 and 1814. On May 11, 1844, Zacatecaluca was upgraded to a city and on February 21, it became the capital of the department of La Paz. An earthquake in 1932 caused great damage to the city.
In the 1980s, Lieutenant Colonel Òscar Edgardo Casanova Vejar, a cousin of the Supreme Commander of the Guardia Nacional , Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova, was in command of the Zacatecoluca garrison and was in command of the Guardia Naciónal in the area of Comalapa International Airport. Òscar Edgardo Casanova Vejar protected the murderers of four sisters of the Maryknoll Missionary Order Ita Ford, Dorothy Kazel, Jean Donovan and Maura Clarke on December 2, 1980. The sisters were murdered on the way from Comalapa airport to Zacatecoluca by members of the Guardia Nacional .
On January 25, 1982, the FAES murdered more than 70 people at Masacre en el Cantón La Joya , the majority of whom were not yet adults.
On May 5, 1987 the diocese of Zacatecoluca was established. The main church of the diocese is the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de los Pobres .
The earthquakes of January 13th and February 13th 2001 claimed many victims.
From 2006 to 2008 Medardo Alfaro of the conservative ARENA party was mayor of the city.
economy
In Zacatecaluca agricultural production such as cotton, oil plants and wood is processed and baskets are made. There is a salt trade, dairies, cutlers, tools and a market day twice a week. The proportion of households in extreme poverty is 17.8% and the proportion of households in poverty is 41.6%.
