St. Medardus is a Catholic parish church dedicated to St. Medardus von Noyon in Neuforweiler , a district of the Saarland district town Saarlouis . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The church was built between 1864 and 1866 according to plans by the architect Franz Georg Himpler . In the 1950s the church underwent a restoration .

architecture

The church building was built in the style of neo-Romanesque Rhenish style as a single-nave hall church. It is divided from west to east into a church tower , nave and choir . The nave has four window axes . The outer walls of the nave are divided vertically by buttresses . Arched friezes below the eaves and short pilaster strips that merge into the buttress also structure the nave. Round-arched friezes and pilaster strips can also be found on the outer walls of the tower, which has a pointed helmet . The interior of the church is divided into four bays , each of which is spanned by ribbed vaults. The individual yokes are separated by belt arches . The choir also has a vault.

Presumably without the knowledge of the architect and without financial compensation, the Trier general vicariate allowed the parish of St. Sebastian in Roxheim to reuse Himpler's plans for the church of St. Medardus in Neuforweiler. At that time, Himpler had already emigrated to the USA.

Furnishing

The wall paintings in the choir, above the triumphal arch , which separates the choir from the nave, and on the north wall under the gallery are striking . The paintings in the choir, which are located in the vaulted areas, show Jesus Christ enthroned in the middle , flanked by two angels . Above the triumphal arch there is a depiction of the Lamb of God in the form of the Easter Lamb, marked with the victory flag, a symbol for the resurrection of Jesus Christ , and an open book with the Greek letters Alpha and Omega .

The interior of the church also includes the high altar with the tabernacle and figures of Saints Matthias , Wendelinus and Medardus, as well as two angel figures on the far left and right. The chancel is flanked by a Heart of Jesus and a Heart of Mary statue. In the church there are more statues on the side walls and under the gallery on consoles , including a figure of St. Barbara next to which a small miner's lamp is attached and St. Oranna . Under the gallery on the north side there is a small apse-like room in which a miraculous image is placed.

organ

Today's organ of the church was by the company Hugo Mayer ( Heusweiler built) and on 30 August 1996 consecrated . The instrument, which is set up in the center of a gallery , has 16 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal .
The case comes from an organ made by Mamert Hock ( Saarlouis ), which was inaugurated on March 30, 1930. The Hock organ had 20 stops on 2 manuals and a pedal.
