The Catholic parish church Heilig Kreuz in the inner city of Neuwied in Rhineland-Palatinate was built from 1960. Since September 1, 2007, it has belonged to the parish of St. Matthias in the Rhein-Wied deanery of the Trier diocese .
history
In 1922 it was decided in St. Matthias to purchase building land in the new settlement area on Engerser Landstrasse in order to later build a Catholic church and other buildings there. The first drafts for the development of these properties were completed in 1924. The plan was to build a church, a rectory, a parish hall with a kindergarten and a sexton's apartment. At first, however, only one kindergarten, which was completed in 1930, was built. It was not until 1952/1953 that additional rooms were added to the kindergarten. The old kindergarten was then converted into an emergency church. On October 1, 1954, the Expositur Hl. Cross was established as a parish, which on August 1, 1955 was elevated to a parish vicarie. Since 1957, the focus has been more on building a church. The design for today's parish church emerged from an ideas competition. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new church took place on April 25, 1960, and the foundation stone was laid on September 4 of the same year. On July 14, 1961, Holy Cross was finally raised to the parish. The first service in the new parish church took place on April 29, 1962. A year later, on March 10, 1963, the parish church of the Holy Cross was consecrated . The parish church of the Holy Cross was built according to a design by the architect Alfons Leitl from Rheydt . It was built in the plan of a fan. The places of the congregation are arranged in a semicircle around the altar. The church is characterized by the division into two divine service areas. At the back of the church there is space for a smaller parish. The tower is a bit away from the church. It is 45 m high and a landmark in the eastern part of the city, the Sonnenland.
