The district Stockstadt includes since 1945 on the Kühkopf Island , the farm group Guntershausen lying areas of the Rhine opposite Stockstadt and the left bank community Gunter Blum was separated. The municipality of Stockstadt consists of a single village and district.
history
middle Ages
The oldest surviving mention of Stockstadt can be found in the Lorsch Codex . It is dated to the time from 830–850. Stockstadt appears there with the place name Stochestat . In the following centuries the spellings Stockestadt (1338), Stocstad (1397), Stogstad (1403), Storstatt (1472) and Stockstatt (1579) can be found.
The church patronage lay with the St. Alban Abbey in front of Mainz , first attested in 1184 in a confirming document from Pope Lucius III. which it owned until the Reformation in 1528.
The basic rule over hill town had the Archbishop of Mainz , who in 1279, the Lords of Eppstein with the Bailiwick belehnte . The high level of jurisdiction was exercised by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen or their feudal people , the lords of Wolfskehlen . In the administrative structure of the County of Katzenelnbogen, Stockstadt belonged to the Dornberg office .
1457 married Anna von Katzenelnbogen, daughter of Philip the Elder, Landgrave Heinrich III. of Hessen. With Philip's death in 1479, the County of Katzenelnbogen - and with it Stockstadt as well - fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse .
In 1487 the Eberbach Monastery and the St. Alban Abbey near Mainz and in 1519 the Lorsch Monastery are occupied as landowners .
Early modern age
In 1535, Landgrave Philip I introduced the Reformation throughout his territory . In Stockstadt this happened against the opposition of Kurmainz , who at that time still had the tithe rights here . When the Landgraviate of Hesse was divided under the heirs of Landgrave Philip I in 1567, Stockstadt came to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt .
Its first regent, Landgrave Georg I , arranged for the Landrecht collection of the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen , compiled by his Chancellor, Johann Kleinschmidt , to become legally binding. She was in Stockstadt a particular law , subsidiary complemented by the Common Law , to the end of the 19th century. It was not until January 1, 1900, when the Civil Code , which was uniformly valid throughout the German Reich , that the old particular law was suspended.
Stockstadt belonged to Kurmainz until 1579 the Hessian Landgrave Georg I exchanged his rights in Astheim and Dutenhofen for Stockstadt and Wolfskehlen .
During this time, Stockstadt developed into an important port due to its favorable location on the Rhine, while Rhine fishing became an important branch of the economy, which was monitored by a "Bachknecht" who was in office in Stockstadt. The Thirty Years' War also brought great hardship to Stockstadt: of 69 residential buildings, only 19 remained at the end of the war in 1648.
During the War of the Palatinate Succession , French troops burned the place down in 1689, with 34 residential houses and more than 100 outbuildings being cremated. It took decades for Stockstadt to overcome this damage.
In 1744, during the War of the Austrian Succession , the headquarters of the Imperial General Johann Leopold Bärenklau zu Schönreith was temporarily located here . The hussar general Johann Daniel von Menzel stayed with him, who was fatally wounded on June 25, 1744 on the Rhine island near Kühkopf. Guests at the Stockstadt headquarters were u. a. also Duke Karl Alexander of Lorraine and Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt .
In 1794 the Electoral Palatinate , the St. Alban Abbey and the Eberbach Monastery, along with church property, are named as landowners in Stockstadt .
Modern times
At the beginning of the 19th century, the “Am Geyer” rivers cut through the Rhine, which separated Stockstadt from the main river. As a result, Stockstadt lost a large part of its economic power, so that many residents emigrated to America. By 1850 around 100 of the then around 800 inhabitants had left the place.
The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Stockstadt in 1829:
“Stockstadt (L. Bez. Dornberg) Lutheran parish village; is located on the Rhine, 2 1 ⁄ 2 St. from Dornberg, and has 114 houses and 801 inhabitants, who are Lutheran except for 7 Cath., 2 Reform and 17 Jews. There is a track across the Rhine, 2 brick huts and 1 gypsum mill. The place has freight forwarding and timber trade and a large warehouse that is currently used to store the salt for the Starkenburg province. - Stockstadt appears as a parish village as early as 1184. The village formerly belonged to the von Wolfskehlen family, whose rights later came to Mainz. Landgrave Georg I exchanged these rights, like the Mainz ones in Wolfskehlen, for his own in Astheim and Dudenhofen in 1579. The right of patronage was confirmed to the St. Albans monastery in Mainz in 1184 by Pope Lucius, and it still had it in 1528. Even after the Reformation, a so-called miserable brotherhood continued here, which had its master brothers and their own inclines, but now they did long gone. In 1689 the French burned down part of the village. "
Courts and Administration
Official system before 1821
In the Middle Ages and early modern times , the functions of administration and jurisdiction were combined in the " Office " at the lowest level , including the Dornberg Office, which existed until 1821 and belonged to Stockstadt.
In 1806 the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt became the Grand Duchy of Hessen . Stockstadt was here in the Starkenburg province . In the course of the administrative reform of 1821, the old offices were dissolved, district councils were created for administrative tasks on the lower level and district courts were created for the first instance jurisdiction.
Administration after 1821
The Dornberg district council was now responsible for the higher-level administration in Stockstadt . In 1832 the administrative units in the Grand Duchy were further enlarged and districts were created. This brought Stockstadt to the Groß-Gerau district. The provinces, the counties and the administrative districts of the Grand Duchy were abolished on July 31, 1848 and replaced by administrative districts, but this was reversed on May 12, 1852. As a result, Stockstadt belonged to the Darmstadt administrative district between 1848 and 1852 before the Groß-Gerau district was again responsible for the higher-level administration. The place remained there until today through all further administrative reforms.
When the border between the French (later: Rhineland-Palatinate ) and the American occupation zone (later: Hesse ) was drawn after the Second World War, the Rhine channel was chosen as the border course. As a result, the Kühkopf Island could no longer be administered by the Guntersblum and Gimbsheim communities on the left bank of the Rhine in the French occupation zone. As a result of Kühkopf was for the most part in the district incorporated Stockstadt.
In the course of the regional reform in Hesse in the 1970s, Stockstadt remained unchanged.
Judicial reforms
In the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt, the judicial system of the two higher authorities was reorganized with an executive order of December 9, 1803. The offices remained the first instance of justice in civil matters . For the Principality of Starkenburg , the “Hofgericht Darmstadt” was set up as a court of second instance for civil matters. In the first instance it was also responsible for civil family law and criminal matters . The higher appeal court in Darmstadt was superordinate to it .
With the administrative reform of 1821, courts in the Grand Duchy of Hesse were also created at the lowest level, which were independent of the administration. The district court Großgerau was initially responsible for Stockstadt , from 1839 the district court Gernsheim . With the reform of the Reich judiciary , which took effect on October 1, 1879, it was renamed " Gernsheim District Court ". This district court was dissolved in 1934, so that the district court of Groß-Gerau was now responsible.

coat of arms
The coat of arms was approved in 1927 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.
Blazon : "In two diagonally crossed red, toppled silver Fährbäume or boat hook , bewinkelt of four silver stars ." | |
Justification for the coat of arms: In the shield, this picture already contains the court seal from the late 16th century with impressions from 1625 to 1791. The devices are so-called ferry trees or boat hooks, which are supposed to symbolize the old importance of Rhine shipping for the place. In more recent literature they have been erroneously explained as forks. The stars are to be addressed as place symbols. When awarding the seal image as a coat of arms, the color scheme was chosen which Wilhelm Diehl had suggested; with silver and red it refers both to the former Mainz rights in the place and to the exclusive state sovereignty of the Landgraves of Hessen-Darmstadt, which has existed since 1579.
The design of the coat of arms was in the hands of the heraldist Georg Massoth. |
