Thailen is a district of the municipality Weiskirchen in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973, Thailen was an independent community.
history
Thailen used to be divided into the two communities Unter- and Oberthailen, which belonged to different domains and administrations. This division is still popular today. Oberthailen belonged to the Electorate of Trier , while Unterthailen was part of the Dagstuhl rule . The two parishes were merged to form the Thailen parish in the 1930s .
One could assume that the name of the village is based on this fact, but there is no reliable knowledge about it. Another interpretation of the place name leads it back to the Latin name tilia for the linden tree , which is also depicted on the town's coat of arms.
As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Thailen was assigned to the then newly formed municipality of Weiskirchen on January 1, 1974 and has been a district and district since then.

The coat of arms of Thailen shows a golden linden tree on a blue background in the upper left quarter, an indication of a possible origin of the place name. The black St. Andrew's cross on a golden background symbolizes the claims of the Dagstuhl rulership on the formerly divided village, opposite the red cross on a white background shows that the other half belongs to the Archdiocese of Trier. In the last remaining quarter at the bottom right, the attributes of Saint Martin , bishop's staff and sword , who is the patron saint of the Thai parish, are shown in silver on a green background .
tourism
The weekend and holiday park of the same name, consisting of weekend houses and a campsite, is located a little outside the village in a rural setting at the Schwarzrinderseen am Holzbach (Losheimer Bach) . In addition to extensive agricultural areas , the district also has a large forest area, which invites you to go hiking and cycling with well-developed forest trails, as well as the many field paths.
