Paul Schneider (organist)

Paul Schneider (born December 2, 1920 in Alfter near Bonn , † June 30, 2002 in Saarbrücken ) was a German organist and university professor.

Life

Schneider came from a Rhenish family of organists. As a schoolboy he played the organ in his home parish in Alfter. He studied at the State University of Music in Cologne . His most important teacher in organ playing was the later Cologne cathedral organist and university professor Josef Zimmermann .

In 1946 Schneider became organist at the Christkönig Church in Saarbrücken . He carried out this task until 1990. In 1947 he was appointed professor for organ and organ improvisation at the newly founded Hochschule für Musik Saarbrücken , where he established a style-forming organ class. With his almost 40 years of teaching activity, he shaped several generations of organ students. In 1985 he retired , but kept a teaching position for another seven years.

For some new organs, Schneider designed the disposition with organ builders and colleagues , for example the Mayer organs in St. Ludwig (Saarlouis) and St. Crispinus and Crispinianus (Lisdorf) as well as the renovation and expansion of the large Klais organ of the Saarbrücken Christkönig Church . He invited the organists Marcel Dupré , Gaston Litaize , Marie-Claire Alain , Michael Schneider and Jeanne Demessieux to the organ concerts there . He cultivated a collegial bond with Albert Schweitzer , Michael Schneider and Daniel Roth . His students include Andreas Rothkopf , Dominique Sauer, Klaus Fischbach , Johannes Bruckmann, Helmut Deutsch , Karl-Ludwig Kreutz, Rainer Oster , Bernhard Leonardy , Klaus-Ewald Fischbach and Andreas Arand.
