Josef Zimmermann (organist)
Josef Zimmermann (born December 18, 1906 in Cologne ; † August 1, 1998 ) was a German organist and university professor.
Zimmermann studied church music at the University of Music in Cologne. He was a student of Hans Bachem and Heinrich Lemacher . In 1933 he passed his state examination. After his first employment in Esch and at St. Stephan in Cologne, he became organist and choirmaster at St. Aposteln . After 1945 he worked in Bad Godesberg for three years until he was appointed organist at Cologne Cathedral in 1948 . Also in 1948 he was appointed professor for organ playing. Zimmermann mainly worked in Cologne, where he has been giving concerts in the organ celebrations since 1960 . He played the world premieres of almost all of Hermann Schroeder's organ works . Zimmermann was an honorary member of the Hermann Schroeder Society and holder of the Papal Order of St. Gregory .
