Bernhard Leonardy

Bernhard Leonardy (born March 21, 1963 ) is a German organist , church musician and conductor .

Life

Bernhard Leonardy comes from a Saarland artist family. His father is the pianist Robert Leonardy , from whom he also received his first piano lessons; his mother is a painter. His sister is the soprano Eva Maria Leonardy . At the Saar University of Music in Saarbrücken he studied Catholic church music (A-exam) and organ (concert qualification ) with Paul Schneider and Daniel Roth . In addition, he studied musicology , pedagogy and didactics of concert practice in the soloist class of Daniel Chorzempa , where he received the soloist diploma with distinction at the Music Academy of the City of Basel .

He won the music award of the state capital Saarbrücken (1993) and the Grand Prix Jean Langlais de la Ville de Paris (1997). In addition, he took part in masterclasses with Marie-Claire Alain , Theo Brandmüller , Olivier Latry and Daniel Chorzempa.

In addition to his work as cantor of the St. Johann Basilica in Saarbrücken, he is internationally active as a concert organist and conductor and works as an organ expert. Leonardy is artistic director of the international organ music festival Orgues sans frontières - organ without borders and director of the vocal ensemble '83 . He is also the spokesman for the initiative group “Realization of the project of a monumental organ for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome based on the specifications of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll ”. In addition to teaching at the "International Institute for Organ" (IIO) in Saarbrücken, which he co-founded and directs, a private training facility for the promotion of young organists, he is visiting professor at Ewha University and the Seoul Theological University in South Korea .

At its meeting on September 11, 2013, the shareholders of the non-profit Musikfestspiele Saar GmbH appointed Bernhard Leonardy as the new artistic director of the festival.

Bernhard Leonardy lives in Saarbrücken.
