history
Development up to the 18th century
The name Hochspeyer is derived from the name of the Hochspeyerbach . The medieval name Hospira of the Hochspeyerbach is proven as early as the 10th century and was derived from the Speyerbach ( Spira ).
The oldest part of today's village of Hochspeyer is the Münchhof from the 8th or 9th century, which was independent until around 1800. Hochspeyer itself may not have been founded until after the turn of the millennium. Some sources attribute the foundation to the Leiningen family, others to the Counts of Saarbrücken.
In 1195, Hochspeyer was first mentioned in a document from the Otterberg monastery . In this document, Emperor Heinrich Vl. the monks their claim to ownership of the Münchhof (then: Hof Sendelborn).
From 1317 onwards, Hochspeyer was to be regarded as a condominium for a period of 480 years , i.e. as the territory of several counties. Around 1500 Hochspeyer had 18 households. In the Thirty Years War (1618–1648) the place was destroyed and remained deserted for 15 years. The cause of the complicated rulership was the early extinction of the male lineage of the Leininger in 1217 and the subsequent division of the legacy of the Leiniger house in 1237 and 1317. In the following centuries, territories were repeatedly exchanged between different owners of parts of Hochspeyer. However, Hochspeyer was never really divided as a village, but was administered jointly by the respective gentlemen, because the taxes were divided. The supraregional dominant manor house of the Electoral Palatinate only played a part as the owner of Hochspeyer, as the Electoral Palatinate only held one-sixth of Hochspeyer for 91 years from 1706 to 1797.
From the 19th century
The condominium only ended when the Palatinate was annexed by French revolutionary troops in 1797, and Hochspeyer became part of a nation-state for the first time in its history. The region was added to the Donnersberg department in 1798 , and the Münchhof is merged with Hochspeyer. Until 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Hochspeier was - as the spelling at the time - incorporated into the canton of Kaiserslautern and formed a community with the neighboring Fischbach . In addition, the place was the seat of a Mairie , which also included Waldleiningen and the community of Frankenstein and Diemerstein . In 1815 the place Austria was added. Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 the community "Hochspeyer und Fischbach" belonged to the Land Commissioner Kaiserslautern ; from this the district office of Kaiserslautern emerged.
Industrialization led, among other things, to the establishment of a chemical factory (1880–1924) for the extraction of raw materials from the charring of beech wood.
During the First World War , which lasted from 1914 to 1918, the railway line was used to transport troops. In Hochspeyer, a hospital is temporarily set up in the old school. Citizens can alleviate the food shortage of 1916/17 by intensifying self-sufficiency.
Frankenstein has been part of the Kaiserslautern district since 1939 .
Second World War (1939–1945): The Hochspeyer traffic junction serves as a transit camp for refugees, workers ( Westwall ) and troops. At the end of 1944 the railway line in Hochspeyer was the target of bombing raids. On March 19, 1945, the Americans marched into Hochspeyer without resistance. After the Second World War, the place became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the municipality became the seat of the newly formed association of the same name in 1972 . On September 4, 1976, part of the municipality of Hochspeyer with 59 inhabitants was transferred to Waldleiningen. During the second half of the 20th century, Hochspeyer also grew considerably, for example several new building areas were created. The community has been part of the Enkenbach-Alsenborn community since 2014 .
