Schneckenhausen is a municipality in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Otterbach-Otterberg , within which it is the third smallest in terms of population and the second smallest in terms of area.

Schneckenhausen is located in the Lower Lauterhöhen sub-area of the North Palatinate Uplands, eleven kilometers north of Kaiserslautern . In the far south the town district extends to the foothills of the Palatinate Forest belonging Otterberger Forest approach. The Sonnenhof residential area also belongs to Schneckenhausen .. Until the end of the 18th century, Schneckenhausen belonged to the Schallodenbach rulership , which was owned by the Counts of Sickingen as an electoral inheritance .

After 1792 the region was occupied by French troops in the First Revolutionary War and annexed after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) . From 1798 to 1814 Schneckenhausen belonged to the French department of Donnersberg and was assigned to the canton of Otterberg . Due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna (1815) and an exchange contract with Austria , the region became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . From 1818 the community of Schneckenhausen was part of the Kaiserslautern regional commissioner in the Bavarian Rhine District, later to the Kaiserslautern district office, from which the Kaiserslautern district emerged in 1939 .

After the Second World War , Schneckenhausen became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone and belonged to the administrative district of Palatinate until 1968 . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , Schneckenhausen was incorporated into the newly formed community of Otterberg . Since July 1, 2014, it has been part of the Otterbach-Otterberg Association, which was created through the merger of the Otterberg and Otterbach Association .
