Mittelbrunn is a municipality in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Landstuhl Association .

geography

Mittelbrunn is located on the edge of the Palatinate Forest 17 km southwest of Kaiserslautern . The community also includes the Mittelbrunnermühle and Mühlbergerhof residential areas .

history

middle Ages

The first written mention of the community of Mittelbrunn dates back to 1230, when a knight Volmar took the name "von Mittelburn" according to his possessions or his origins. However, the actual development of the place goes back further.

Evidence of the oldest human life is, on the one hand, the menhir known as the “Langenstein” , a path marking a high road from the oldest pre-Roman times. In addition, the Höhenweg is another testimony to the oldest human settlement. In addition, there is the so-called “chair”, according to various research results, a Franconian one hundred percent thing.

Nanstein Castle was built in Landstuhl around 1160 . Mittelbrunn belonged from the beginning to the new office of Nanstein. In the further course of history, Mittelbrunn was repeatedly used as a pawn by noblemen. Among other things, it was pledged to the Wörschweiler Abbey in 1402 . In 1484 the Junker Walter Blick von Lichtenberg sold his share in the village to the knight Schweickard von Sickingen . However, its share was only one sixth, as the division of villages into different domains was quite common at the time. Other partial owners of Mittelbrunn were, among others, Duke Ludwig I of Zweibrücken and Hartmann Bayer von Boppard . At times, half of the village was owned by the Lords of Oberstein . This part of Mittelbrunn was pledged to Maria Einsiedel , the Teutonic Order , in 1516 . The well-known knight Franz von Sickingen also owned a sixth of the village at that time. It was not until 1589 that Mittelbrunn came as a whole to the Landstuhl estate, owned by the Sickingers .

Modern times

During the Thirty Years' War , the houses in Mittelbrunn, as in all other villages in the West Palatinate, were deserted or burned, their residents perished in need and misery, and only a few escaped.

In the years 1670 to 1680 the Feick, Gerhard, Heintz and Stahl families are again based in Mittelbrunn, names that were represented here earlier.

The second half of the 17th century was characterized by steady upward development under Sicking's suzerainty. In addition, there was always denominational friction between Catholics and Protestants . After the occupation by French troops as part of the French reunification policy, the rights of Protestants were severely restricted. In 1692 there was a decree that all marriages between Protestants and Catholics had to be catholic and all children from such marriages had to be baptized Catholic. When the French had to leave again after the Peace of Ryswick in 1697, the Lords of Sickingen took over and even tightened all religious regulations. The evangelicals were forbidden from any public religious practice, evangelical clergy were no longer allowed to enter Mittelbrunn. This situation led to louder protests from the local Protestants. After numerous letters of complaint to the representation of the Protestant imperial estates at the imperial regiment in Regensburg , an agreement was finally reached in 1790 with the Lords of Sickingen. Mittelbrunn became the seat of a Lutheran pastor for the so-called small court.
