The owl head tower at Eulenbis

Eulenbis is a municipality in the Kaiserslautern district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Weilerbach , within which it is the smallest local community in terms of population.

geography

location

Eulenbis is located about 13 kilometers northwest of Kaiserslautern in the North Palatinate Uplands within its sub-area Upper Lauterhöhen . Eulenbis is the highest local community within the community of Weilerbach. The hamlets Mückenmühle and Untere Pfeifermühle also belong to the community . Neighboring communities are - clockwise - Sulzbachtal , Katzweiler , Rodenbach , Weilerbach and Erzenhausen .

Elevations and waters

The Eulenkopf to the west of the village , which is located directly on the boundary of Erzenhausen, has a height of 422  m above sea level. NHN . The Mooslauter runs through the middle of the east of the district. From the left it takes on the Eulenbis receiving water . In the far south, the Rischbach forms the boundary to Weilerbach for a short distance.

history

The first written mention as Ulengebeiß dates from 1380. In addition, there was a deserted area in the municipality called Mückenhausen .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , the place was incorporated into the canton of Wolfstein . In 1815 the municipality first belonged to Austria . After the Congress of Vienna , it was added to Bavaria a year later . In 1817 the community moved to the canton of Kaiserslautern . From 1818 to 1862 Eulenbis was part of the Land Commissioner in Kaiserslautern , which was then converted into a district office.

From 1939 he was part of the Kaiserslautern district . After the Second World War , Eulenbis became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the place became part of the newly formed community of Weilerbach in 1972 .

Buildings

The Owl's Head Tower, alternatively called the Owl's Head Tower, is an approximately 19-meter-high four-storey observation tower that was built on the eponymous mountain in 1913 and 1914 and houses a registry office in the lower one . On the three levels above there are viewing platforms with open windows of different sizes. The octagonal tower is walled up with hewn sandstones up to the parapet height of the third floor at a height of nine meters . Above it, it is plastered in white up to the lower roof. The topmost room, set back into the roof, with a platform at a height of 12.2 meters, has a square floor plan, is clad with copper sheet on the outside and has a pyramid roof . From there, the view extends in a south-easterly direction to the Palatinate Forest . The key to the tower can be purchased in the nearby restaurant for a deposit.

nature

The only natural monument on site is a red beech in the Finstertal . The nature reserve Krausenbruch extends for a short distance over the south of the Eulenbis district.

Regular events

Every year at Whitsun there is a mountain festival on the Eulenkopf. In addition, a model railway fair is regularly held on site.

The county road 21 binds Eulenbis on to the road network. The district road 20 branching off from it leads to Weilerbach. State road 356 runs through the east of the municipality marker . The community is connected to the motorway network by the A 6 (junction: Kaiserslautern-West).
