Theo Gries (born February 10, 1961 in Mittelbrunn ) is a soccer coach and former German soccer player .

Player career

amateur

Theo Gries started playing soccer in Mittelbrunn at 1. FC Mittelbrunn. From Mittelbrunn he switched to TuS Landstuhl . There he played in youth and amateur teams.

professional

The midfielder Theo Gries began his professional career in 1983 with the then first division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he only played a Bundesliga role. For the 1985/86 season he moved to Alemannia Aachen and played for the Aachener until October 1988 in the 2nd division 125 games in which he scored 47 goals.

In the autumn of 1988, he switched to league rivals Hertha BSC . With Hertha he rose in 1990 under his former Aachen coach Werner Fuchs in the 1st Bundesliga; but the Berliners got down again in the following season 1990/91. For Hertha he made 176 league appearances with 74 goals, including 28 games and 6 goals in the Bundesliga.

The crowd favorite moved to Hannover 96 during the 1993/94 season . After another 20 games and 8 goals in the 2nd Bundesliga, Theo Gries ended his career as a professional footballer at the end of the 1994 season. He then played for Tennis Borussia Berlin for one season in the Regionalliga Nordost and won the Berlin Cup. In the third-highest division , Gries had met once in 13 games.

Coaching career

After his active career as a footballer, he worked as a coach for Tennis Borussia Berlin and Hertha Zehlendorf . He was also the head of the Alemannia Aachen youth center. From April 2008 he headed the youth center of 1. FC Union Berlin and from July 2008 trained its second team. After a disagreement with Uwe Neuhaus , the coach of the professional team, he was suspended. He stayed with the club as a scout until 2013.
