history

Gehrweiler is mentioned for the first time in a document as "novale Jerisonis" in 891 in the prestarie contract between Bishop Theotelach von Worms and Count Erinfrid. The village was later owned by the Electorate of the Palatinate and fell to the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken in 1444 .

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , the municipality was incorporated into the Canton of Winnweiler within the Donnersberg department . In 1815 the place belonged again to Austria as a result of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna . A year later it was slammed into Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 Gehrweiler was part of the Kaiserslautern Land Commissioner , which was then converted into a district office.

On December 1, 1900, the community moved to the newly created district office Rockenhausen . From 1939 the place was part of the district of Rockenhausen . After the Second World War , Gehrweiler became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In 1961 the community had a total of 391 inhabitants. In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the community moved to the newly created Donnersbergkreis. In 1972 it was added to the newly formed community of Rockenhausen . Gehrbach has been part of the Nordpfälzer Land association since 2020 .

religion

According to an undated document dating from around 1469, Count Palatine Ludwig I of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , Abbot Peter von Münsterdreisen and Father Johann, pastor of Rockenhausen and conventuals of Münsterdreisen state that there has not yet been a chapel in the village of Gehrweiler because there is belong to the parish of Rockenhausen. However, since "a miraculous image of Our Lady " had been brought to the town "a short time ago " , the residents built a chapel which was consecrated three weeks ago . The Count Palatine granted a collective patent for the costs incurred during the consecration, as well as for the purchase of "chalices, chasers, altar decorations, books and other emergency items" and the Münsterdreisen monastery allowed the church to participate fully in the indulgences previously granted to it. Apparently a pilgrimage developed, which also enlarged the village. Later, St. Jacob appears as the chapel patron.

The chapel fell into disrepair during the Reformation, with the exception of a remnant, which was later expanded into a baroque bell tower. Members of the village community worked on their own to design a village center around the tower, which contains a fountain, a guild tree and quiet areas.

The Catholics belong to the Diocese of Speyer and are subordinate to the Donnersberg deanery , the Evangelicals to the Protestant Church of the Palatinate .
