history

Prehistory and early history

The prehistoric and early historical finds are limited to Neolithic tools and Roman fragments.

Early middle ages

Gauersheim is a Franconian foundation from the sixth or seventh century, as the place name indicates. This ends - as is typical with Franconian foundings - in -heim , preceded by the Franconian first name Gawirich , which can be translated as Gawirich's home . Gauersheim first belonged to Wormsgau , then to Nahegau (county) . The first written evidence can be found with the spelling Gouurichesheim in a deed of a gift from Emperor Ludwig the Pious to the Prüm monastery in the Eifel and dates to the year 835. Viticulture has been documented since 893 .

High and late Middle Ages

Around 1200 the Counts of Leiningen were the fiefs of the Prüm / Eifel monastery ; the Rhine Counts as fiefdoms of the Archbishop of Mainz and the Bolander with rights and property in Gauersheim. The local knights of Gauersheim are mentioned in documents between 1222 and 1447. In the 14th century and also in 1409 the Wildgraves had sovereignty. Then the village fell to the Knights of Oberstein , next to whom the Knights of Steben von Einselthum established themselves in the course of the 15th century .

Modern times

After the childless Friedrich Steben von Einselthum died on March 12, 1549 as a result of a riding accident, his cousin, Hans IX, inherited. from Wallbrunn to Partenheim, all rights of the Steben von Einselthum in Gauersheim. In 1614 the Lords of Wallbrunn bought the rights of the Obersteiners and thus acquired the local rule, which they held until the end of the 18th century.

After 1792 French revolutionary troops occupied the region and annexed it after the Peace of Campo Formio (1797) . From 1798 to 1814 the village belonged to the French department of Donnersberg and was assigned to the canton of Kirchheim . Until his death in 1805, the last Baron functioned from Wallbrunn from the Partenheimer line, who resided in Gauersheim, as its mayor (mayor). In 1815 the place had a total of 488 inhabitants.

Due to the agreements reached at the Congress of Vienna (1815) and an exchange contract with Austria , the region became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . From 1818 the community of Gauersheim was assigned to the Kirchheim Land Commissioner in the Bavarian Rhine District, later to the Kirchheimbolanden District Office.

From 1939 the place was part of the Kirchheimbolanden district . After the Second World War , Gauersheim became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , Gauersheim moved to the newly formed Donnersbergkreis in 1969 ; three years later, the community was incorporated into the also newly created community of Kirchheimbolanden .

War memorial

The main street and the Jewish cemetery are both designated as monument zones.

In the center the old roads of cross Worms to Kirchheimbolanden and Alzey to Kaiserslautern . Only with the construction of the Napoleonic Heerstraße , the so-called Kaiserstraße , which led across the nearby Kirchheimbolanden, did Gauersheim lose its importance. Up to the present day, the town center is characterized by a monument zone made up of three four-sided courtyards from the 18th and 19th centuries. Century , the castle , the former office building , the church , the rectory and the former Wallbrunn'sche ban economy with the prayer chamber .

The Jewish cemetery with 108 tombstones from 1770 to 1934 is an important testimony with high documentary value for the Jewish population, as a large number of easily legible inscriptions have been preserved. The older tombstones in the northern part show traditional curly and semicircular ends, the newer stones in the southern part show the adaptation to the Christian burial culture. From 1860 on, historicizing, especially Gothicizing, gravestones with additional German inscriptions predominate. As in Christian cemeteries, a change in material from sandstone to granite can be seen from 1900 onwards.

The listed individual objects include a war memorial, the former fortified church , which is located in the old cemetery, which was abandoned around 1800, the new Christian cemetery with the gravestones of the Lords of Gagern and the Steuerwald family with the electroplating of an angel created around 1900 was founded around 1800 . Then comes the castle of the Lords of Wallbrunn ; the latter is a voluminous, late baroque three-wing complex that was built from 1715 to 1760 over the remains of the moated castle of the Lords of Gauersheim. In 1805, after the death of the last Baron von Wallbrunn, the Barons von Gagern acquired the palace from his Partenheim heirs. The Wallbrunn'sche Bannwirtschaft , whose cellar once served as a bedside room , now functions as a village community center.
