Gustav Magnus von Wallbrunn (* December 25, 1702 , † June 19, 1772 in Lörrach ) was Baden-Durlach Landvogt for the rule Rötteln and the Landgraviate Sausenberg . The rise of Lörrach to a real city and the beginning of the industrialization of the front meadow valley are largely due to his administration.

Wallbrunn came from the family of the Lords of Wallbrunn (Partenheim line) . His father was the Baden-Durlach secret councilor Johann Christoph von Wallbrunn and his mother Eberhardina Henrica von Stockheim . The Baden-Durlach Hofrat Johann Eberhard Friedrich von Wallbrunn was a brother. In 1720 Wallbrunn was enrolled at the University of Tübingen. He continued his education at the Académie de Lausanne , where he learned French. It is believed that he acquired his good Italian language skills during a stay in Italy. The local rule over Gauersheim belonged to his possessions .

In May 1748 he was appointed to succeed Ernst Friedrich Leutrum von Ertingen in Lörrach , where he became governor for the Rötteln rule and the Sausenberg county - the Rötteln district office . In 1759 he was appointed to the real secret council of the margraviate of Baden-Durlach.

Soon after taking office in Lörrach, he vigorously supported the Lörrach Council in obtaining city privileges in order to make the location more attractive for investors from Switzerland and Alsace. In general, he consistently implemented the economic policy of the young Margrave Karl Friedrich , who had only assumed his reign in 1746. On his initiative, "mercantilist city marketing" was carried out and an advertising brochure was created in German and French, which presented the advantages of a business location in Lörrach.

With a police ordinance, Wallbrunn brought about a change in the Markgräfler costume in 1764 . He banned the gusset skirt, which had been part of traditional costume until then, as it was composed of narrow, wedge-shaped strips of fabric so that the fabric of a discarded skirt could hardly be used. From Wallbrunn's point of view, this was a waste. Its ban is one of other measures for popular education that were taken under the government of Margrave Karl Friedrich. So Wallbrunn introduced spinning and weaving rooms for schoolchildren to get them used to working life.

Due to tensions with the Basel neighborhood, Wallbrunn wanted to retire in January 1772, but at the request of the margrave and the communities in his senior office he refrained from doing so. He died on June 19, 1772 in Lörrach.

Honors

On August 24, 1748 he received the House Order of Loyalty to the House of Baden . In Lörrach, a street is named after Wallbrunn. In the Evangelical City Church of Lörrach there is a memorial plaque for Wallbrunn in the corridor between the church and the chapel.
