Ernst Friedrich Leutrum von Ertingen (born June 17, 1690 in Tübingen , † May 5, 1760 in Kusterdingen-Wankheim ) was the Baden-Durlach governor of the Rötteln Oberamt and the Baden Privy Councilor.

Life

Leutrum completed part of his training in Neuchâtel , Lausanne and Geneva . He learned the French language and studied philosophy and geometry . In 1708 he was enrolled at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . Nothing is documented about the subjects. Due to his later activity and his description of the Rötteln Oberamt, it is assumed that he also dealt with the camera sciences . 1715 Leutrum was by Margrave Karl III. Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach appointed court counselor and real chamberlain with a seat and vote in the court councilors' college. In 1716 he was given the supervision of the margravial camera system, which he was supposed to reorganize. In February 1717 he was also officially President of the Rentkammer College. As early as October 1717 he was given a new job as governor of the Rötteln Oberamt. As the successor to Bernhard von Gemmingen, who retired due to old age, he took over the administration of the largest Baden-Durlach Oberamt, which also included the supervision of forestry and the mines. In the same year he married, making him one of the gentlemen in the Unterriexingen condominium . In 1726 Leutrum was appointed Privy Councilor of the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach.

In 1740 Leutrum received his share of the paternal inheritance, which had been under the administration of his widowed mother since 1734. Leutrum became master of Kreßbach , Eck and Wankheim . In 1742 he acquired the Kilchberg manor with the Kilchberg Castle . His possessions were concentrated in the Tübingen area . On April 10, 1747 Leutrum was appointed to the Privy Council.

After Joseph Clemens von Ow zu Felldorf, the knight captain of the knight canton Neckar-Black Forest-Ortenau , died in 1746, it became apparent that Leutrum would be elected as his successor. The rules provided for a change in the denomination of the knight captain and the gender of the Leutrum von Ertingen had already provided a number of officials in the knight's canton. On June 7, 1747, Leutrum informed the young margrave, Karl Friedrich , that he had been elected as knight captain. About a month later he informed that he had stipulated a period of one year from the knight's canton to hand over his office as bailiff. However, the privy council under Friedrich Johann Emich von Üxküll-Gyllenband came to the conclusion in the summer of 1747 that conflicts of interest between the margraviate and the knighthood in the Ortenau could lead to conflicts of interest and Leutrum should therefore leave the service of the margraviate earlier . Formally, the resignation from the service was set for April 23, 1748. On May 4, 1748 it was announced that Gustav Magnus von Wallbrunn was appointed as the new governor. Leutrum was adopted on May 27, 1748. He died on May 5, 1760 and was buried in Kilchberg Church.

Extract from Leutrum's manuscript

Leutrum's manuscript is the description of the country, begun in 1731 and handed over to the margrave unfinished on March 27, 1747, with the detailed title:

In addition to a general description of the constitutional, administrative, economic and social situation in the Oberamt, the manuscript contains 44 descriptions of places. Leutrum also describes the preparation and implementation of the hereditary homage on August 15, 1738 in Lörrach. Officials and subjects vowed after the death of Margrave Charles III. Wilhelm, loyalty to Prince Karl August von Baden-Durlach as administrator of the guardian government.

The descriptions of the places are structured according to the district bailiffs. The basis for the descriptions are documents from the registries and a questionnaire with 27–29 questions about the church situation, ownership structure, tax revenue, number of inhabitants and special legal conditions. Bailiffs and pastors had to answer these questions. For some location descriptions e.g. B. of Weil am Rhein, as well as Lörrach with its districts, summaries have been published.

Leutrum also collected contracts and other legal documents. This also includes 22 guild regulations of the guilds active in the Oberamt, which give an insight into the regulation of economic life at that time.

The description of the country should obviously serve as the basis for state intervention to improve the living conditions of the residents and thus also the tax revenue for the margrave. It is assumed that the Baden-Durlach privy councilor and archivist Karl Friedrich Drollinger, who lives in Basel, supported Leutrum's description of the country with his work in the archive. Overall, the manuscript is rated as a systematic collection with objective reproduction of the facts, with their evaluation and interpretation being left to the reader. It is still considered an important historical source today.

The result of Leutrum's collecting activity over 16 years took on a volume of 6276 pages, which are stored in eight manuscript volumes in the General State Archives in Karlsruhe . The continuation of the work, suggested by Leutrum himself in 1747, did not materialize and the margravial administration noted "ad registraturam until one would have several time to go through it".

Family and origin

Leutrum came from the Leutrum von Ertingen family and was the second eldest son of the Baden-Durlach privy councilor Ernst Ludwig Leutrum von Ertingen and Friderica Juliana von Stockheim . On April 1, 1717, he married Anna Margaretha von Sperberseck (1696–1786) with whom he had five daughters and four sons, of whom only four daughters and one son reached adulthood:

  • Maria Juliane (1718–1779) ∞ Alexander Magnus Baron of Saint-André
  • Ernestina Wilhelmina (* 1720) died unmarried
  • Friederike Charlotte (1723–1783) ∞ Friedrich Daniel Freiherr von Saint-André
  • Anna Philippina Elisabetha (1732–1779) ∞ Johann Ferdinand Freiherr von Tessin
  • Christof Ludwig (1735–1765) - Duke of Württemberg Chamberlain; died childless, with which this line of the Leutrum von Ertingen ends

Honors

Leutrum was awarded the Baden House Order of Loyalty in 1717 . The Leutrumweg in Lörrach-Tumringen is named after him.
