Karl August of Baden-Durlach

Karl Magnus August Johann Reinhard von Baden-Durlach (born November 14, 1712 in Durlach ; † September 30, 1786 ibid) took over the chairmanship of the guardianship government in 1738 as the oldest agnate of the House of Baden-Durlach , which after the death of Margrave Karl III. Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach was convened and ruled the margraviate of Baden-Durlach until 1746 .

Life

Karl August was the son of Christoph von Baden-Durlach and Marie Christine Felizitas zu Leiningen-Dagsburg-Falkenburg-Heidesheim (* December 30, 1692 - June 3, 1734), the daughter of Count Karl August zu Leiningen-Dagsburg-Falkenburg- Heidesheim . Karl August was at the court of his uncle Margrave Karl III. Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach was educated and later studied four years in Lausanne.

The regent

After the death of his uncle Margrave Karl III. Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach on May 12, 1738 he entered the custodial government for his second nephew, Karl Friedrich .

Precisely because the waves from the dispute with Durlach had not yet smoothed out due to the relocation of the residence to Karlsruhe (1718) and the widow of the city founder also belonged to the guardianship government and still resided in Durlach in Karlsburg , the Durlachers hoped for a relocation to the old royal seat.

Karl August, however, decided to move to Karlsruhe in the palace. The Regency Council confirmed the Karlsruhe residents the privileges they had received in connection with the new construction of the city. However, the castle was changed significantly. The installed merrymaking, including the "tulips" or girls of joy held by Karl Wilhelm , had to give way. The palace square became the parade square.

The business of government was entrusted to the President of the Hofrat von Üxküll . The greatest success of the guardianship government is the comparison with Maria Theresa in 1741 , in which she waived all sovereignty and feudal claims of Austria regarding the Landgraviate of Sausenberg , as well as the dominions of Rötteln and Badenweiler in return for a cash payment. This eliminated a centuries-old threat to Baden. In addition, the previously Upper Austrian half of the village of Grenzach was acquired. Apparently they knew how to take advantage of Maria Theresa's difficult situation at the beginning of the War of the Austrian Succession .

In 1740, Elector Karl Philipp von der Pfalz was also able to negotiate his waiver of rights to Pforzheim , Stein and Graben .

The Regency Council handed over the business of government to Margrave Karl Friedrich on November 22, 1746 after the emperor had declared his age of consent.

The military career

Karl August was since 1735 General Wachtmeister since 1742 , Field Marshal Lieutenant and since 1760 Reich Field Marshal of the Imperial Army .

1749–1752 Karl August was the commander in chief of the Württemberg army corps.

Karl August took part in the Seven Years War and commanded a corps of the Imperial Army in the Battle of Roßbach .
