The lords of Apremont were a noble family from Lorraine, whose ancestral castle was in Apremont-la-Forêt , Department of Meuse. They were vassals of the bishops of Metz and Verdun . In the course of the 13th century they rose to become counts through marriage and enfeoffment. They provided a bishop of Metz and three bishops from Verdun. Gottfried II was with Lauretta, the heiress of Simon III. married from Saarbrücken . With the support of his uncle, the Metz bishop Johann , he inherited the county of Saarbrücken , which, however, since he left no heirs, fell to the Lords of Commercy.
The Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hardenburg line from the Leiningen noble family owned the Landvogtei Unterelsass in the 16th century and in 1466 acquired, among other things, the rule of Apremont in Lorraine. Thus the new line from Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hardenburg-Apremont was created , which is mentioned in the Worms register of 1521. It possessed a fragmented territory between the Palatinate, West Lorraine, East Lorraine and Alsace. The county of Apremont was incorporated into the Duchy of Lorraine in 1599 .
