On the spell of the place is with the Langensteinchen with 451  m above sea level. NHN is the highest point on the left of the Saar in Saarland. history

Weiten is the oldest documented place in today's Merzig-Wadern district . In 634 the place was mentioned in the will of Adalgisel Grimo , the oldest surviving document in the Rhineland, as "villa fidinis". However, on the basis of Roman finds, including the remains of a Villa Rustica , it can be assumed that the site was built further back.

In 1984 the village celebrated the 1350th anniversary for a week. The annual Kaapesfescht emerged from this festival , the highlight of the Weiten village events until 2014. The 30th anniversary of the village festival was the last edition of the Kaapesfescht so far . The reasons for this are sharply declining visitor numbers and the clammy club coffers of the many Weitener associations that had hosted the village festival until then.

On January 1, 1974, Weiten was incorporated into the municipality of Mettlach.

Since June 2001 there has been an official partnership with the town of Weiten in Lower Austria . This partnership resulted in monuments in the form of sundials, which are each just before the town exits in the direction of Faha and the old "Weitener" path (to Orscholz ).

coat of arms

After the Saarland minister of the interior of the municipality of Weiten had approved the use of its own coat of arms in a document dated July 28, 1964, it was presented to the representative of the municipality of Weiten on August 15 of the same year with the participation of the entire population and prominent guests of honor in a dignified celebration , presented to Mayor Nikolaus Reuter.

The coat of arms of Weiten is divided into three fields. The upper left third shows the red coat of arms of the Archbishops of Trier on a silver background, which verifiably appears for the first time on the secret seal of Archbishop Heinrich von Finstingen . The ecclesiastical connection from afar to the bishop's chair in Trier goes back to the Franconian times. The people of Weiten were always able to enjoy the favor and custody of the Archbishops of Trier, as can be seen in individual visitation protocols. In the upper right field the Lorraine cross is shown with two crossbars on a silver background. As a dynastic symbol, it came from Hungary via Poland to Lorraine and is a reminder of the fact that the former municipality of Weiten belonged to the former Duchy of Lorraine . The centerpiece of the Weitener coat of arms is the silver deer antlers with a cross on a broad base on a green ground. The deer antlers with the crucifix refer to the Weiten parish patron, St. Hubertus of Liège . The green area indicates the extensive meadows and fields of the place.
