Bethingen is a district of the municipality of Mettlach in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). From 1957 to the end of 1973, Bethingen was an independent community.

location

The place is in the southwest of the municipality in the valley of the Salzbach , which flows into the Saar near the Saarschleife near Dreisbach .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1030 in a donation from Margravine Jutha of Lorraine. The Odilienkirche and the Odilienbrunnen were first mentioned in 1630. Bethingen was a place of pilgrimage from 1330 to 1920 . The pilgrims asked for help with eye problems at the Chapel of St. Odilia . The Odilienkapelle had to be demolished in the course of the road construction in 1953. The new St. Odile Chapel was built between 1955 and 1960, about 250 m from the old location, and consecrated on Whit Monday 1961 . Its slender bell tower is open at the front and gives a view of the two-part interior. The bell storey located in the upper part of the tower contains a small bell. The shaft-like hall below serves as the entrance hall of the chapel and contains the community's war memorial for the victims of the two world wars of the 20th century from Bethingen. The from Nennig coming artist Nikolaus Schmitt Nennig made in this regard in 1960 for the rear wall of the bell tower hall a large-scale sgraffito that the Archangel Michael is fighting the dragon Satan. The artist had already made a similar composition in 1955 for the facade of the Bildungshaus Sonnental in Wallerfangen . The dedication scratched into the plaster in Bethingen reads "ST. MICHAEL KÄMPFER GOD'S GUIDE YOU INTO THE HOLY LIGHT". A metal plate with the names of the fallen is attached below. There is a Pietà sculpture on the stairs to the Odile Chapel.

Bethingen originally formed the municipality of Wehingen-Bethingen with neighboring Wehingen . This was split up on January 1, 1957 into the two communities Bethingen and Wehingen. On January 1, 1974, Bethingen was incorporated into the Mettlach community.

Bethingen, whose place name is derived from the Germanic name Batho , is now a pure place of residence .
