Saarhölzbach is a district of the municipality of Mettlach in the Merzig-Wadern district in Saarland . Until the end of 1973 Saarhölzbach was an independent municipality.

history

The place was first mentioned in 802 in the chapter of Charlemagne under the name Hulzbach . The name Saarhölzbach has been found in documents since around 1650. However, various archaeological traces point to a settlement as early as Gallo-Roman times.

Originally the place was characterized by agriculture and especially forestry. The smelter Paul Peltre ran an iron and hammer mill on the threshold brook , which the name Pelterswald still reminds of. With the emergence of the ceramic industry ( Villeroy & Boch ), the place changed into a typical workers' village in the 19th century. The place received a stop on the Saar line . Due to the structural changes in recent years, Saarhölzbach is increasingly orienting itself towards a pure residential community . In addition, tourism is gaining in importance.

On January 1, 1974, Saarhölzbach was incorporated into the municipality of Mettlach.

Attractions

Saarhölzbach is characterized by its location in the narrow Saar valley in the immediate vicinity of the Saar loop . Great vantage points are the bird's rock, the devil's chimney and the Kreuzkupp . The boundary stone from 1779 in the parish garden testifies to the eventful history in the border area. There is also the war memorial for those who fell in the world wars opposite the Kreuzkupp, both of which are separated by a 100 m deep gorge.

Saarhölzbach youth center

Saarhölzbach has had a youth center since 2007, it is located near the multi-purpose hall in the old school building.

Cultural asset

Call out the backrest

When it is customary to call out the armrests, the pairs of armrests are proclaimed across the gorge between the war memorial and the Kreuzkupp. The couples then go to the back ball together . The custom is also known in the area. Leaning here means borrowing or is understood that way today. Because the dance partners who are called out and assigned to each other are only loaned for this backrest ball. Of course, long-term relationships have emerged from some leaning partnerships, especially in earlier times.

  1. Hans Thies: Attempt at a phonology of the dialect of Saarhölzbach , 1912, p. 1. Online . This statement, although it is often repeated, does not seem to be substantiated: The apparently intended donation by Zerf and Serrig with the description of the forest to the Archbishopric Trier on September 1, 802 (Diploma of Charlemagne No. 268) does not name Hulzbach and is also seen as fake in the MGH edition of 1906.
