Historical geography
In the municipality of Gaiberg are the desert areas of Waldolfeshusen and the village of Gowenkirchen, which is dated to 1016 in a forged document from the 12th century, but which is probably not in Gaiberg.
history
Gaiberg probably originated in the High Middle Ages as a clearing settlement from Gauangelloch and was first mentioned in 1312 as Gauberg . The place originally belonged to the diocese of Worms and was bought by the Electoral Palatinate in 1419 . There Gaiberg belonged to the Meckesheimer Zent and from the 15th century to the own villages of the Dilsberg winery . Most of the farmland was owned by the residents. In 1803 Gaiberg came to Baden and was subordinated to the Neckargemünd office, which in 1857 became the Eberbach district office , which in 1863 was merged into the Heidelberg district office , later the Heidelberg district. In 1967 Gaiberg became a state-approved resort. When the district of Heidelberg was dissolved in 1973, Gaiberg became part of the Rhein-Neckar district .
Until recently, the place was characterized by a purely agricultural character, with forestry being particularly important, with extensive use of the forest for pasture and chopped forest operations. The village's day laborers also mostly found their livelihood in the forestry of the Heidelberg city forest. From the middle of the 19th century to the First World War, the cultivation of cherries , and later raspberries, was an important source of income. The first industrial company in Gaiberg only settled in 1957 with a company producing automotive rubber parts that offered around 200 jobs. In 1968 more than half of the labor force in the town were out commuters to the surrounding cities, the majority (261 of 385 commuters) were employed in Heidelberg. In 2012 Gaiberg celebrated its 700th anniversary.
In 2018 the "Linden-Apotheke" closed its doors forever. There was no successor who could continue to run the pharmacy.
From 2018 to 2020 the center of Gaiberg was extensively redesigned. The new town center now has several stairs and steps. The traffic island that shaped Gaiberg was also removed. There is now a new fountain and a new location for a snack. The building of the former restaurant "zur Krone" was demolished. The restaurant "zur Linde" was also demolished and there are now residential buildings in its place.

coat of arms
The blazon of the coat of arms reads: In silver on green ground a red stone column and a green deciduous tree with a black trunk.
The coat of arms goes back to a court seal from 1751. It already showed a column next to a tree. In 1900 the coat of arms was accepted by the municipality at the suggestion of the General State Archives. The stone still stands next to a linden tree in front of the Protestant St. Peter's Church. The meaning of the stone is unclear. Conjectures range from an ancient grave to the remains of a cross.
The flag is green and white and was awarded by the Interior Ministry in 1956.
Partnerships
Gaiberg maintains a partnership with La Canourgue in the Lozère department , Occitania region , in the south of France .
Culture and sights
Buildings
The town hall of Gaiberg was built as a schoolhouse in 1857 and has been used as a town hall since a new schoolhouse was built in 1905.
The tower of the Protestant St. Peter's Church probably dates back to the 13th century. The church became Protestant in the course of the Reformation in 1556 , but temporarily fell back to the Catholics during the time of the Palatinate church division, who exchanged it for the church in Dilsberg in 1707. In 1737/38 the nave was renewed, and around 1850 the tower received a new bell room. In 1957 the church was extensively renovated.
The Catholic St. Michaelskirche was built in 1955/56 instead of an older chapel. The outside of the choir tower was adapted to that of the Protestant church. The church was extensively renovated in 2007.
