The community borders in the north on Meckesheim , in the east on Eschelbronn and Waibstadt , in the south on the city of Sinsheim and in the west on Dielheim .

Community structure

The community of Zuzenhausen includes the village of Zuzenhausen and the farmstead Schloß (manor).

history

Zuzenhausen was probably founded in the 6th or 7th century by Frankish settlers who settled there after the victory against the Alemanni .

The place was first mentioned in 769 as Zozenhusen , later also occasionally called Zuzanheim , and belonged to the monasteries Lorsch and Hirsau . Together with the Meckesheimer Zent , Zuzenhausen came under Palatinate sovereignty in 1330 .

The local rulership , however, was held by the Speyer Monastery , which they gave as a fief to the Lords of Venningen . The Venningers had owned parts of the place since the 14th century, from 1637 they owned the whole place. During the Thirty Years War , Zuzenhausen was sacked in 1622 by passing Bavarian troops and in 1634 by Swedish troops. After a battle, Bavarian troops again destroyed the remains of the town and castle in 1643, which is why only 9 families lived in the village after the end of the war. Zuzenhausen burned down again in 1689 because of the wars of conquest of Louis XIV , the plague of which only ended after the time of Napoleon . In 1803 the Electoral Palatinate was dissolved and Zuzenhausen fell to Baden , where it initially belonged to the Neckargemünd district office and from 1813 to the Sinsheim office . In the 19th century, many Zuzenhausen residents emigrated to America because of price increases and famine . During the Second World War, Zuzenhausen, after Eppingen , was one of the communities in the former Sinsheim district most severely affected by the effects of the war.

In 1939 there were 921 inhabitants, at the end of 1945 there were 1095. During the Baden-Württemberg municipal reform , Zuzenhausen was able to keep its independence and since 1974 has formed an administrative community with Sinsheim and Angelbachtal . During the district reform in 1973 , the district of Sinsheim was dissolved and the community was incorporated into the newly founded Rhein-Neckar district. In 1999 Zuzenhausen had more than 2000 inhabitants for the first time.

The flag is red and white and was awarded by the Interior Ministry in 1963.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Zuzenhausen Castle

Zuzenhausen Castle, already mentioned in the 13th century, can only be made out as an overgrown ruin. After several extensions in the middle of the 16th century, the castle was the seat of the Lords of Venningen . After the War of the Palatinate Succession , the building fell into disrepair. The ruin cannot be entered due to its dilapidation.

Agnestal Castle

Agnestal Castle

To the west of the village, on the road to Horrenberg in the Seebach valley, is Agnestal Castle (also Seehilder Castle ), a three-story Baroque building with tower-like side wings, a mighty hipped roof and associated farm buildings, built from 1716 by Major General Johann Hermann von Freudenberg from the Palatinate 1780 owned and completed by Carl Philipp von Venningen and his wife Anna Maria geb. von Hutten, whose alliance coat of arms adorns the building.

At the beginning of the 19th century the castle was converted into a farm. The management was given up after the Second World War, and the castle has recently served as a discotheque. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has been using the castle grounds as a training center since the second half of the 2009/10 Bundesliga . In 2008/09 the castle was renovated and expanded for around 14 million euros. A training center with five sports fields was created.

Churches

The Catholic Church was built in 1826. The nave is classicistic while the tower is still medieval. The interior of the church was completely renovated in 2008. The organ comes from Johann Ferdinand Balthasar Stieffell .

The Protestant church was built in 1831 in the classicist Weinbrenner style . In 2009, the old were steel Notglocken by a new bells replaced bronze bells.

There are numerous well-preserved historic half-timbered houses in the village.

The town hall is a modern functional building from 1967 and was renovated in 1998. It replaced a baroque building in the 1960s, because back then there were grants for a new building, but not for renovation. A fire station is integrated in the building .

Regular events

The Dachsenfranzfest takes place every two years . This festival commemorates Francesco Regali alias Dachsenfranz , an original of Italian origin who stayed in the region in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1866 he took part in the war of the Italian freedom fighter Giuseppe Garibaldi , but had to flee because he struck down a despotic superior. His years of escape also led him to the forests of the Kraichgau. He lived in caves, was a master at trapping and sold furs and badger fat as the basis of his special ointment.

At the Dachsenfranzfest, the place is set back to the time around 1900 by depicting old handicrafts and customs and the story of this trapper is recreated. There are several plays about the Dachsenfranz that are performed in the open-air theater. The initiator of this event is the local Adler brewery, which has been successfully selling its beers under the brand name "Dachsenfranz" for several years.

Every year there is also a village kerwe followed by a kerwe parade. This annual campaign was launched by the Briggehossler Kerweverein .
