Location of Schnappach in Saarland

Schnappach is a district of Sulzbach / Saar in the Saarbrücken regional association , Saarland .

Schnappach is located in the north of the urban area and is the youngest part of the city. Before the reorganization, the place belonged to St. Ingbert . The buildings of Altenwald and Schnappach merge into one another.

history

The name Schnappach can be derived from the Middle High German word “snaben”, a subsidiary form of “sneben” = hop, jump, fall. The brook skipped over the stones. In 1535 the place name "Schneipbach" or "Schneitbach" appears for the first time as a field name. In 1784 the Mariannen- Glashütte was built. In 1810 the Vopelius glassworks was added, which was later relocated to St. Ingbert.

Schnappach belonged to the city of St. Ingbert in the Bavarian Saar Palatinate . As a small " enclave ", the place formed the border to the Prussian area, where the coal and steel industry (coal mining, iron and steel industry) prospered. In Bavarian beer was a staple food, but not in Prussian. In this respect, the beer in Schnappach cost significantly less than in the neighboring Prussian communities. Mining and industrial workers had the habit of going to pubs "after their shift", preferably in Schnappach because of the significantly cheaper beer. This led to an enormous density of bars in a short time. According to an old miner, there were around 50 houses in Schnappach at the turn of the century (19th / 20th century), around 15 of which housed taverns.

In the course of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the place came to the city of Sulzbach on January 1, 1974.
