Altenwald is a district of Sulzbach / Saar in the Saarbrücken regional association , Saarland .
location
The district is located northeast of Sulzbach in the upper Sulzbachtal and borders directly on the city of Friedrichsthal . To the southeast is the Sulzbach district of Schnappach , the development of which merges with that of Altenwald. To the west of Altenwald is Hühnerfeld , another district of Sulzbach.
history
1765 was near the Sulzbacher melt the first coking plant in Germany established, which was closed 1,963th
In 1841 a mine was founded in the Altenwald , which at that time already belonged to Sulzbach , which was closed in 1932.
In 1843 there were eleven houses with 76 inhabitants at the gatehouse of the princely wild gate. This is where today's location grew in the past decades. By 1914 the individual houses had already grown together to form a village.
Buildings
One of the buildings worth seeing in Altenwald is the Protestant church , which was built from 1891 to 1893 in the neo-Romanesque style as a prayer room in brick construction and expanded in 1894 by the choir and in 1896/1897 by the church tower. The extreme inclination of the tower caused by the subsidence of the pits led to the name "Leaning Tower of Altenwald". Also worth seeing is the Catholic parish church Herz-Jesu , which was built in 1910/11 as a three-aisled basilica with a three-sided polygonal choir based on the design by Saarbrücken architect Moritz Gombert . Both structures are listed as individual monuments in the Saarland monuments list.
The colliery house , a compressor house and the porter's house have been preserved from the former Altenwald mine . The latter was renovated in 2000 by the city of Sulzbach. The colliery and gatekeeper's house was built in 1890 as a brick building with color-contrasting structural elements.
