Altenwald coking plant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Altenwald coking plant was the oldest coking plant in Germany. It belonged to the Altenwald mine and was founded in 1765 and closed in 1963. The first attempts to melt iron with coke instead of charcoal began at the Sulzbach smelter on the initiative of Prince Wilhelm Heinrich von Nassau-Saarbrücken as early as 1761. In 1765, the first coke ovens were installed in Altenwald.
