The Gebertsham branch church is located in the Gebertsham district of the municipality of Lochen am See in Upper Austria and is dedicated to the Holy Cross . The wall paintings uncovered in 1986 make it an outstanding example of late Gothic sacred art. The Roman Catholic branch church of the Lochen parish church is part of the Mattighofen dean's office in the Linz diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

Although Gebertsham has been attested since the 13th century, the first church probably dates from the late 15th century. In a document from 1483, a court in Gebratzhaim is first mentioned at the Holy Cross . Under canon law this church belonged to the parish of Lochen, which was formerly part of the Archdiaconate Mattsee and the Diocese of Passau ; after the Innviertel came to Austria in the Peace of Teschen , Lochen and Geberstham were placed under the Mattsee dean's office. In 1785 the church was closed as part of the Josephine reforms , but reopened in 1833. In 1987 the former German President Walter Scheel was married in this church .

The church is a small, single-nave building with a ridge turret on the west side from around 1500. The Gothic ribbed vaults were broken out in the 18th century.

The Gebertshamer winged altar dates from 1515/20. Stylistically, he refers to the workshop of the master Gordian Guckh from Laufen . In the middle shrine and on the inside of the wings the legend of the Holy Cross is depicted, on the right the finding of the cross under Empress Helena and on the left the return of the cross stolen by the Persian king Chosroes . Below are scenes from the Passion . Noteworthy are the portrayals of people on the main picture, and a. a man in black armor and peasants armed with flails and sticks - perhaps a reference to the peasant uprisings at the time the altar was built. Further stations from the Passion of Christ can be seen on the outside (left capture and flagellation , right crowning of thorns and mockery ), which are a copy or a sculptural representation of the small copper engraving passion by Albrecht Dürer . On the inactive wings there are depictions of the saints Wolfgang , Dionysius , Ulrich and Blasius . The predella tables come from the Danube School . They show the saints Sebastian , Christophorus , Barbara and Katharina . Opposite the entrance to the nave wall is a late Gothic crucifix .

During the renovation in 1986, wall paintings were discovered, including 178 multi-colored depictions of plants, several consecration crosses (with the hand of the oath as a gesture of blessing) and four larger-than-life murals ( St. Christopher , possibly with the donor, crucifixion scene , legend of St. George and the martyrdom of St. Sebastian ). These obviously come from the time the church was built. The year 1522 was retained at the end of the choir.
