plant

Will is best known for his wire rope braced stainless steel sculptures. Steel ropes hold parts of the sculpture in suspension, which - despite their weight - gives them an apparent lightness. The shapes often revolve around the themes of circle, sphere, cube or spiral. A sculpture is often created, for example, by Will dividing a shape, such as a circle, into parts and then putting the parts together to create a harmonious composition. The parts not only complement each other to form a new whole, they are usually also in tension. In one case, this tension arises from the fact that parts of the surface of a cube ( e.g. Cube 4 (2003)) are shifted against each other as in an exploded view, in other cases ( e.g. circle division, arches floating (2001), Klinikum der Universität Würzburg) due to the fact that the lines of the individual parts express an apparent movement in dynamic interplay.

Individual evidence

  1. cf. Peter Anselm Riedl in Matthias Will - Sculptor , Darmstadt, 2004: »The fact that artistic composing for Will is less an expression of a need for harmony than a manifestation of the courage to reveal tensions is confirmed by the artist's surprisingly emotionally charged and, in their own way, perfect ink drawings (.. .). "
  2. cf. Peter Anselm Riedl in Matthias Will - Sculptor , Darmstadt, 2004: »(...) The two components are now connected with the help of thin steel cables in such a way that they form a virtual volume: a spatial figure characterized by parallelism that represents the intended stereometric Body and at the same time refuted in its corporeality. If the parts were not internally coherent, one could be reminded of a so-called exploded view, as is common in the field of technical illustration. "
